GREAT ITEM AND A LIFESAVER FOR DOGS

Sharronβ€”June 27, 2014βœ“ Verified purchase

Never have to ever shock my precious dog...got this to use the vibration to get her attention. We occasionally stay at an area that it is not safely fenced and is on a highway....It works great to get a puppy or small dogs attention. I have touched the vibrate button once..and she learned immediately that when the color is on, she is to stay by me...lol...never have had to touch that button again. I know a lot of people consider an item like this as inhumane...but the life of my dog is more important than her being startled by a small vibration. We also have one for our larger dog...Both behave perfectly with just the collar on! :) Read more

Yes, This Works With Chihuahuas

trapezeβ€”November 27, 2016βœ“ Verified purchase

First of all, let me say this: This training collar WILL work with a Chihuahua. And if it will work with that breed then it will work on any small dog. I have a 4-5 pound Chihuahua pup about five months old that I received recently and I went looking for a training collar that would fit the dog and would not harm it. This collar satisfies both of those needs. I did trim the collar strap by a few inches because it is long enough for other small, yet larger than a Chihuahua, breeds. The remote has three different ways to correct the dog: Electric shock, vibration and tone. I start with the tone and if that doesn't correct the dog then I use the vibration. I save the electric shock for a last resort. The electric shock is variable with a user selected range of 1 to 10 which is shown on a small LCD display on the remote. For my dog the first level is effective without causing it harm. After a few instances of having to use the electric shock I am able to get good results with just the tone. The collar module has a non-intuitive way of being turned on and off that users should be aware of. Due to the desire to make the collar module as waterproof as possible there is no external switch. The charging port has a rubber plug to keep water out. The on/off switch is magnetic. To turn the collar module on and off you have to match a specific spot on the remote (it's a small embossed circle) with the "power" symbol on the collar module for about one to two seconds. However, the collar is always in the "on" condition when it is removed from the charger. I have seen other reviews that mention short battery life so a few words on that. Both the collar and the remote have a rechargeable battery. They must, of course, be charged separately because the collar only comes with one wall adapter. That said, the remote's battery lasts ten or twenty times as long as the collar so that it rarely needs to be charged. I have not run out of battery on the collar during normal use and I think that this is where a lot of reviewers may be using the collar inappropriately. In my opinion, the collar is not to be put on the dog and left on all day or for extended periods of time. I am not sure how long the battery in the collar will last but there really isn't any reason to go beyond an hour or two and here's why: A training session with any dog shouldn't be very long. When I am training a dog, whether it be with a collar or with traditional reward/praise-type actions, I will work with the dog for perhaps twenty to thirty minutes at a time. If a training session goes longer than that the dog becomes bored/annoyed/frustrated and there is much less of a result for the effort...nobody wins. Although you can keep the training collar on the dog for extended periods and correct it when it does something wrong that does not necessarily get better or faster overall results than using it more sparingly. Again, my opinion and your mileage may vary. The other thing that must be understood when it comes to battery life is that, at the moment, battery technology is pretty poor. In general, most electronic technology has been zipping along at a furious pace but battery technology is still stuck in the 1990's. The only way that this or any other training collar can have longer battery life is to make the battery physically much larger and heavier. You will know that battery tech has finally arrived when you can charge your phone in five minutes and use it any way you like for a week. This is why electric cars aren't in everyone's driveway. Until that happens, well...you get to struggle along with poor battery performance just like everyone else so suck it up. Now, back to the training collar. This is really a pretty decent product. It does what it should and it works reasonably well. I have just a couple of minor issues with it that prevent me from giving it a full five stars and they both have to do with the remote control. The remote control is small. Very small. I have large hands but even someone with average sized hands is going to find the remote to be too small. This is an ergonomic issue, the remote doesn't fit the hand in a normal and comfortable way such as, say, your television remote control does. Now, you could say that a larger remote wouldn't fit in your pocket or purse as well and you would be correct. However, again, in my opinion, you should never have the remote in a pocket or purse where it could inadvertently be activated, potentially harming the dog and confusing it at best. But still, it's too small and I often find that I am holding it upside down and pushing the vibrate button when I wanted to push the tone button. Fortunately, the shock button is in the middle position so there is no mistaking it regardless of the remote's orientation. Secondly, there is a wheel-type switch on the side of the remote that allows you to adjust the shock level and to also transmit to another collar (if you have two). This switch is much too easily (and accidentally) activated. I have frequently found that the shock level is not where I left it (say, at 3 or 4 instead of 1) due to the switch being lightly bumped. Sometimes I have found it set to work with the #2 collar instead of the #1 collar. This has resulted in me having to check the shock level and collar number each and every time that I go to activate it. I don't want to harm my dog so I have to verify that it is always at the lowest level before I push that particular button. But these are both minor issues overall, at least, for me. And that is because that after only a couple of weeks I will no longer need to use the shock function and will instead be relying on just the tone for correction. I am going to be flipping the collar module around so that the shock probes do not come into contact with my dog. This will make accidental shock or too high a shock level irrelevant. So, good training collar if used properly and if it's few limitations are understood and compensated for. Read more

Directions are Difficult; Frequent Recharging Required

Al Johnsonβ€”November 10, 2013βœ“ Verified purchase

Two Problems: 1. The collar does not hold a charge for long. It needs frequent recharging. 2. Whoever wrote the directions did not have mastery of the English language. Long run-on sentences and some strangely worded sentences. But the writer spoke English better than I speak Chinese. In spite of those two flaws, it did help my dog respond to the command, "Back!" The beeper and the vibrator were enough to convince my dog to stay out of the street. However, it took me about three weeks to master how to coordinate the charging of the collar with the times that I need it for further instructions. Read more

Works OK but I regret going cheap. Battery life is terrible.

Fernando Jβ€”May 6, 2013βœ“ Verified purchase

I had a big dog years back and bought a PetSafe model for around $100 to train him. It worked like a charm. So when it came time to train my little dog to not run away and heal on command, I started looking for a small dog version. I bought this one because it was cheap and the reviews were ok. The terrible battery life is what really kills it. It would die at inopportune moments when my dog wandered too far and now I couldn't "beep" him to come back. The PetSafe model I had rarely had to be recharged. I also like how the Petsafe model just had one button that you hold down and it beeps 3 times and then shocks if you don't lift your finger before the shock. This model has separate beeps and shock button. I try to be consistent (beep warning, then shock if necessary) but I'm not sure if it's beeping when he's far and I don't know how many times. So in summary. I probably "saved" $60 buying this alternative but now I never leave it on my dog. So it sits in a drawer. I used to leave the PetSafe collar on my big dog for weeks so it would be ready to use if he took off after a squirrel or something. Read more

Waste of Money. No better than the $3.00 version on Ebay

Attorney Martinβ€”January 5, 2014βœ“ Verified purchase

Can't turn receiver on and off. Battery will not hold charge. Instruction booklet is poorly written and very difficult to follow. Can not be used for barking because barking will not operate it. I am disappointed that Amazon even carries this product. Read more

Works for cats!

Chrisβ€”March 1, 2020βœ“ Verified purchase

I've got a 20 pound Savannah cat who mercilessly attacks my 6 pound geriatric cat....but this shock collar has proven itself as a great teaching tool. I did have to change the actual collar for a breakaway cat collar - the wide plastic collar that comes with the device does NOT work for cats, and is quite dangerous if used. My old 6 pound cat is very thankful! Read more

Works great!

Angie Skaggsβ€”May 8, 2014βœ“ Verified purchase

I use this collar on my miniature Dachshund who barks at everything and will go after any person he sees. Being he is a puppy, I needed to quickly nip this in the butt so to speak. He was stubborn and it took a few times for him to get the hint but now we don't even have to use the collar, we just put it on him and he knows what COULD happen if he chases and barks at something again. I have another one for my coon hound and same thing, we don't even turn it on, she knows what could happen if she barks. Love it! Read more
