Your hands get cold before you do without these.
Great investment. This'll be my seconed winter commuting between NJ and NYC, 80 to 150 miles daily, all the way down to 8° last year. It's possible to layer enough to stay warm those days, buy ou can only wear so many pairs of gloves so you're limited. Then, your hands are stiff, you can't feel your controls; it's an all around bad time. These are toasty down into the high 20°s. Instead of gloves over thin winter gloves over glove liners, you only need these (and maybe a liner below 15°. (Ive got some heated glove liners from last year and have considered using both, but that probably isnt safe and I dont recommend it at all) Below that, your finger tips will start to suffer, but nothing like the screaming agony of unheated gloves. Theyre comfortable, soft interior, the fingers are long enough but the gloves themselves could be a little bit tighter. They say they work best when snug. These fit well, but they arent exactly snug. I would like a longer-wristed glove but gauntlets fit neither over nor under jacket sleeves. These are short and slim enough yo fit under pretty well. The cuffs could be a little tighter, along with the rest, minus the knuckles. Ive gotten a pair soaked before and they were never quite the same. The inside was never as fluffy, but they were still pretty fluffy. The leather feels nice. Fairly thick, soft enough, well-assembled. I was concerned about the palm because they dont have a dedicated slider, but I lowsided on an oil slick and rode my hand for at least twenty feet. The ground in this instance was very, very slippery - i almost fell standing up -, so your experience may differ significantly, but there was no discernible damage to the leather at all and my hand was fine. I would like the knuckle armor to be wider, but I've got broad hands and Ive never found a pair of knuckles that didn't sit on top of mine without bothering me. These don't dig in to the point of causing pain, but theres a wire that connects right next to the pinky, and if I dont twist the gloves on in the right way, that does cause some pretty serious, similar discomfort. It is avoidable if I rotate the gloves from thump to pinky while I put it on, but that isnt perfect. The heated liners I mentioned are of a different brand that I dont prefer to Gerbing, they didn't require a controller, which I find superior. The controller is sold separately and is not inexpensive. If you want the wireless remote, which I got, you also have to buy that and, probably, the handlebar mount. Another ~120? The wires are too long on that in my opinion, so they're always hanging down on a way I find distracting while I ride, and even more so when I'm off the bike. There are benefits to this sustem, though. You have all the buttons in one place so you dont have to fumble for buttons scatted across your body (or on each hand). I do imagine the controllers without handlebar-mounted remotes would be similarly difficult, but i cant speak to that. I do wish I got the permanent controller. I imagine they just having one less but of stuff to hang onto would be a huge improvement over my setup. Would probably look a lot cleaner, too. Because of the controller situation, I probably wouldn't recommend these unless you were going to get the jacket, too. A pair with dedicated buttons would be far less expensive. Its a nightmare to thread the Y cable through your sleeves without losing track of the ends in any of them, though. These become more worth it with the more pieces of the suit you get. These arent perfect, but its pretty clear why Gerbing is the industry standard. Because of the nevessary additional purchases, they probably arent worth it if you arent going to at least get the jacket, but they work well enough that none of the flaws detract from the five-star rating One thing, though: I knew id fit an XL fairly well but only M and XXXL were stated as in stock. What i really wanted was a large, but neither they nor XLs were available. I figured I'd try the mediums. That isnt what they sent me, though. They sent me the XLs. Tgeres zero chance the Ms would fit, so it works out way better for me, but be aware that what you order may not be what you get. Read more
