Gitzo is a beast. The kind of beast you need to have a secure photography platform. Highly Recommended

On my StarCircleAcademy website I have some really detailed examples of what can go wrong if you choose the wrong tripod, head, or quick release plates. Gitzo Series 2 and better tripods are NOT a bad choice. Indeed, I think they are a GREAT choice. I had a Series 2 and broke the head (also called the casting or spider) where one of the legs attaches... but that took 8 years and a lot of mistreatment. By contrast I've snapped several inferior tripods and given up in disgust on several others. Do yourself a favor and get the Gitzo Mountaineer Series 2 or 3. Avoid the Series 0 or 1 or the Gitzo traveler versions... they are just too flimsy for any "real" DSLR. At one of our Night Photography workshops it was very windy and 4 of 16 people had their tripod/camera blow over. Not mine. I hung my camera bag from the center column and took advantage of the sturdiness of the legs. (It also helps to set up the tripod correctly, the center column should be vertical regardless of the slope of the ground). The series 2 and 3, tripods are beasts. The newer design even has a quick way to detach the center column so you can put the tripod nearly flat on the ground. That scenario doesn't happen very often, though, and it remains to be seen if that extra mechanism to lock on the top plate on the tripod will prove to be a weakness in stability rather than a strength. Gitzo also offers a Systematic series with no center column. While that may sound superior - and lighter, I find that it's much easier to fine tune the height with the center column present, than without one. Besides, if you like that arrangement, you can remove and not carry the center column - you'll only save a few ounces though. Because my night photography often has me point my camera straight up, the extra few inches I can raise the head above the legs makes it possible to tilt my camera straight up, even if I'm using a telephoto lens with a ring collar on my ball head. You can't do that if you don't have the extra room afforded by the center column. The only real choice, in my opinion is between the 3-segment Series 2 and Series 3. Little is gained by choosing the 4 segment models... they are heavier and I have found that I have no difficulty packing my 3-segment series 2 or 3 INSIDE of most luggage by removing the center column. The Series 2 will also save you about 8 carry ounces over the Series 3, and gain you about an extra inch of maximum height. If there is a design flaw with the Gitzo, it's the following 2 things: 1. The hook on the center column has a rubber O-ring that won't last (or stay put) long. 2. If you don't put some super glue (or locktite) on the feet, you'll lose those pretty quickly. My Series 2 lost two feet in mud the first weekend I used it. Fortunately Gitzo sent me replacement feet at no charge. If you're looking for the perfect ball-head to put on top of your Gitzo, I recommend the Acratech GP-SS Ballhead . It's very light and versatile, yet secure and well made. In the comments I'll add a link to yet more details. Read more

Good but way to expensive for what you get

Excellent tripod. Overpriced. There is not one part on this tripod that justifies a $1000 price tag. I have another, lighter carbon fiber tripod that cost 1/4 of this Gitzo. The ONLY difference is in the diameter and thickness of the tubes. Otherwise, the two are functionally identical. Does it cost $700+ to put 5mm larger diameter and 1-2mm thicker tubes on a tripod? No, no it doesn't. I use this with Sony a900's and a99mk2's and up to 400mm zoom lenses so I need a very solid and preferably light tripod. One really nice feature of this tripod over previous versions and other manufacturer's tripods I've seen and/or used, is that they've manage to maintain the stability while cutting weight. So, for its size it is light. Personal preference - I've worked with or owned tripods with different leg lock systems. The barrel grip is by far the most foolproof and easiest to operate. ALL of the lever type get caught in brush, grass, bags, clothes, trees, shoe laces, seat belts ... I would never go back to a different system. Also personal preference - This tripod has a center column. If you are looking for the most solid Gitzo tripod you can get, look at the Systematic Series with no center column, especially if your primary use is big glass. 300-400mm+. IMHO, unless you specifically need or want a center column, for the prices of Gitzo tripods you are well and away better off spending an extra $100 on the Systematic version with no column. Its worth it. For those of you who are curious, I tested this tripod with a RSS BH-40 head and the column up about 3-4" (indoors) with a a99ii & 16-35mm Zeiss and Minolta 28-70mm f2.8 and wireless shutter activation (2sec delay). Testing from 1-3 second shots. There is a noticeable degradation in image sharpness. I took several shots with the column all the way down with the Zeiss outside in a heavy breeze and things sharpened right up. May not be noticeable to most people but it is noticeable. Again, if you're going to shell out this much for a tripod, you should get all you can possibly get out of it. Cons (more) - Spiked feet are extra. Lame. No case. I'm sorry but I'm not going to dignify the paper towel thick POS piece of cloth the tripod came in by calling it a 'tripod case'. Add another $100-300 for a case. Why are these cons? Because my $250 carbon fiber tripod came with both. In fact the case was very well built and even padded. Note: This is a 3 section tripod. It is LONG. Even longer with a big ball head like the RSS BH-40 or BH-55 and its also fairly big around. Measure well before purchasing a case. :) This is a very nice tripod and very well built, but there is nothing that makes it stand out from comparable - much cheaper - tripods. And if remarks on the Internet can be trusted, that includes Gitzo's support. Thankfully I have (so far) been spared dealing with that. I got this for about 1/2 the sticker price so I can't really complain too much. If this were even a $500 tripod it would probably be worth it. I just can't recommend this product given what it costs.
