So it fits decently well, it’s not as comfy to wear as I’d like but it does the job. Definitely not cute but I’m not looking for cute. I got it for snowboarding, and my buffs always freeze on my face and become rock hard so I was really hoping it would heat around my nose and mouth to prevent that from happening. The back of my neck isn’t usually cold. I’ll update this review with how it performs once snowboarding season kicks off, and whether or not the face freezes. It fits nicely under my helmet which I expected. I don’t know that it’s worth the price as I have other heated apparel that isn’t this expensive. I think if it heated the face, it would be. That perk would be worth it for me for sure. All in all if it’s in your budget and you need the added warmth, I do recommend. Read more

I’ve been waiting for colder weather to try out this heated balaclava here in the Chicago area. It really does take the edge off a chilly morning. The polyester fabric feels soft and comfortable. It also functions as a regular, unheated balaclava. I actually ordered two different balaclavas from Peonyrise. The other was a standard balaclava, while this one is a little more versatile because you can wear that one more as just a neck gaiter by flipping the cap backwards off your head. I'll cut to the chase and say that I preferred this one for its sizing and versatility. This "sectional" balaclava has a polyester knit exterior and a polyester cut pile inside. Don't expect absorbency. Over the mouth and nose is a section that's a coarse nylon netting lined with microfiber and some sort of thin insulating fabric in between. My head is fairly average for a grown Caucasian male. 7-3/8", if I recall correctly. For me, this was a comfortable fit, while the other unit I tried was much too tight. The balaclava is thin enough that you could wear a cap or hood over the top for added warmth and protection from wind. I found breathing to be comfortable, but I hesitate to endorse it for long-term wear in extreme cold. I really don't know how well it would perform. That said, I'm not sure if there are any breathing panel designs that avoid moisture buildup in extreme cold. The only downside to the ability to flip the head covering off is that it's just a little harder to get everything centered when you put it on. I thought I had it on fine until I looked in the mirror. But who really cares anyway? As for the heater, it is identical to the heater in the other model. It uses a thin graphene sheet and a small rechargeable battery. The warmth is focused solely on the back of the neck and extends about 8". I would have liked more coverage, like on top of my head. The graphene pad is a very thin plastic sheet which makes a crinkly sound when you squeeze it. It is flexible enough that I do not notice it while wearing the balaclava. Allegedly, an advantage to the graphene sheet, as opposed to a single heating wire, is its ability to withstand minor damage yet still function. There is a square, lighted pushbutton that advertises that you're electrified. The color changes with the power level, which starts on high. The battery is about the size of a pack of cigarettes, but half as thick. Perhaps even a bit thinner than that. It weighs only a few ounces, and since it sits in a small pocket on the back of your neck, you barely notice it is there.. A small zipper is well-concealed and securely holds the battery within. The heating starts very quickly and is noticeable after just a minute or two. It stays even—no hot spots or sudden surges. Battery life matched the specs in my testing indoors: around three hours on high, five on medium, and eight on low. Out in the cold I expect it to drop a bit since lithium-ion batteries always lose capacity when they’re cold. The control button is simple, and you can see the color-coded light through the fabric. The pack charges by USB-C and takes a few hours to charge, even when using a 30-amp charger. You must remove the battery for washing and there is a handy silicone cover to protect the electrical connection from water. If you choose to machine wash, it is recommended to place the garment in a mesh bag. From what I can make out in the instructions, only air drying is appropriate. Pros: - Soft synthetic fabric - Versatile. Wear it as a balaclava or a gaiter. - Even neck warmth - Battery life matched the claim Cons: - Heat only at the back of the neck - Faint crinkling sound from the heating layer - Slow recharging Read more
