That's where this hat stretcher came into play, and let me tell you, it was an absolute lifesaver. Using this tool was surprisingly simple and incredibly effective. Without any pain, damage, or disfiguring my beloved fedora, it now fits comfortably! This review is specifically about the 4-way stretcher. It works, but has two big drawbacks. First, it is too thin, at 1.25", it is much thinner than the hat sweat-band. The problem with this is that after stretching, the hat band is left misshapen and all bent over where the edge of the stretcher was. The second problem is that it is not beveled at all - just straight sided chunks of wood. A good stretcher is slightly beveled-in (smaller circumference) on the side facing the crown of the hat - this maintains the line of the crown, which naturally slopes a little from the top all the way down to the brim. With this stretcher, you end up with a weird step-shaped hat where the base is obviously stretched out further than the rest of the crown above it. Not good at all. To overcome these problems, you need a steamer, to constantly keep the felt pliable, and then work the stretcher in small steps at two different levels inside the hat. It is doable, but a tedious process. On a final note - this stretcher has a thick rubber band that goes all the way around the hat, and mine is already tearing. The seller customer service did not even reply to my email request for a new band. However, after the initial version of this review was posted, they did contact me and arrange for a partial refund to cover the cost of my buying replacement bands myself. With careful use and patience, this stretcher does what it needs to do. The misshapen step lines in the crown can be worked out with careful steaming and shaping after the hat is at the final size needed. Based on that, I have raised my rating. Read more

The hat stretcher is an amazing device that has brought increased comfort to the many hats that I wear, no pun intended. Being challenged by my dermatologist to always wear a hat when I am outside, I have many hats and caps, mostly newsboy and ball hats. Even when the hats are adjustable, they never seem to quite fit my head, leaving marks in my forehead and a headache after hours of wear. The hat stretcher has allowed me to reshape my hats to better fit my head. I wish I would have got this years sooner. The stretcher is solidly built with wood and metal parts and should easily hold up to years of use. I highly recommend. Read more
