There are all kinds of similar pillow style shiatsu massagers across a wide band of price points. At the current $140, this is way out on the high end for this type of massager. My wife and I have a few different pillow style massagers. In terms of functionality, overall I'd say this massager is fine, sort of middle of the pack. It does give a good, firm massage. There isn't much difference in the speeds, but there's some difference in the modes. Different modes make both sides run symmetrically or asymmetrically, so that both sides are moving in the same place at the same time, or not. There's heat, which is nice, though it's a small area and is just a little warm, not real hot like a heating pad (my first included image is with the heat on, showing the red spot from the red light heat). The amount of heat probably isn't going to help relax stiff muscles. The off-white/light beige colored cover zips off so you can wash it, which is nice. The massager won't run while plugged in, which is a common disappointment with some rechargeable electronics. The massager I got is a bit different than what's shown in the product description. With the one I got, the controls are built into the side of pillow instead of being on a corded remote control. This makes it difficult to change settings while using it. I have to sit up and turn over in order to change the settings since otherwise I can't see them. Mine also has a big divot in the top to put your head vs. being flat, which seems fine. The intended orientation is to have the arms at the bottom of the pillow, and to rest your head on the divot in the pillow, but I found that I can turn the massager upside down so that the massaging arms are at the top of the pillow instead. If I rest my head more on the arms, that gives a nice neck and base of skull massage. With the pillow style massager, you really need to lie down flat on it. I find it difficult to sit upright in a recliner with it, for example, because the massager pushes my head too far forward, and it won't stay in place. Read more

It doesn't just vibrate; it actually kneads the muscles along both sides of my neck, just like a real pair of hands would. It's incredibly relaxing. I start using it, and before I know it—maybe ten or fifteen minutes later—I've dozed off right there in my chair. The massage nodes are hard at first, but that's actually a good thing! You need that kind of pressure to really work out the deep knots. The memory foam in the headrest is super high-quality, too. It supports your head perfectly so your neck can just let go. If you’re looking for a gentle experience, you may consider another option. However, if you're suffering with a genuinely stiff neck and really need relief, this massager is surprisingly effective, especially if you can push through the initial shock of how "rough" it feels. When I first opened this I was pleasantly surprised. I love the soft feeling of the fabric, and it looked like it would fit nicely around my shoulders and neck. However, it feels a little stiff and uncomfortable when you first position it. I think that my problem is I was using it on top of my pillow in bed, so the angle was weird, laying flat with nothing underneath it definitely makes a difference in how it contours to your neck and shoulders. When you turn on the main massage function, be prepared: it hurts at first. The kneading action is aggressive and focused, hitting deep muscle knots with force. It definitely feels like it’s working too hard for the first few minutes. I quickly realized you have to kind of push through this part. Once you settle and relax a little, the pain gives way to genuine relief. After about five minutes, the intense pressure starts to feel like a necessary deep-tissue massage. It actually succeeds in loosening up my stiff neck better than I would have initially thought. The slight heating feature is a nice bonus adding a soothing warmth that helps the muscles relax as the kneading continues. I really like the rolling motion of the massage, it kneads, and feels like a deeper tissue massage.
