A review by an 8-year-old...

Things I like about the game: 1) I like that you can breed foals 2) I like that I can pet, groom, feed, and nurture all the horses—especially the fouls. 3) You can also breed adult horses 4) I like that you can build a lot of different things—a pasture, a stadium, a large, medium, or small barn—a lot of other things. 5) You can play with your horses. 6) You can ride a lot and discover new places. 7) There's a lot of tasks or adventures. 8) Also, you can race and gain fame—which helps you build stuff. Decent, but it’s a horse game so don’t expect a masterpiece.

There are certain genres of games you have to accept won’t ever be jaw droppers. Horse games are like that. Most tend to be meh. You ride the horsie, you jump on the horsie, you pet the horsie. Any of us who play these know what this is. As far as horse games go though I think this is the best I’ve played so far throughout the years. The art style is cute, the mechanics are fun, and the riding controls are decent. The locations are pretty and it has a shallow story. Though I don’t call it shallow as an insult, it’s a horse game. You’re not playing this to play something deep and fulfilling. You’re playing for horses. My only real complaints is a lack of fast travel and the camera controls. It’s best to ride playing in locked camera mode, but walking around on foot the locked camera mode is not fun. Game needs a couple more camera options to make it more livable. If this game came out with a sequel, I’d buy it. Read more

Its fine

One-winged Au RaOctober 5, 2023

So I’m a pretty avid gamer, but I do enjoy more chill simpler games on the side. And horses will always appeal to my inner child. I’m sure most horse obsessed children will love it. For me, I didn’t expect much so I wasn’t disappointed per Se. Controls could definitely be improved. Jumping tended to be awkward or not respond well. Or trying to jump would send you rocketing into the heavens to be stuck until you fast travel home. Glitching through the map, also getting permanently stuck until you fast travel, also happened a fair amount. Those were the most annoying bugs. I do wish there were more horse breeds. Also customization of your farm and such would have been more enjoyable. Also the races were all just essentially steeplechases, which can get old, so it would have been nice to have just a normal race or actual jumping. Especially since you have jumping arenas in your farm, but they’re never used for competition. In all it’s fine. Bugs can make it irritating, but if you really enjoy chill horse games it does fill that. Read more

Great horse game, not super well made

Katie S.January 2, 2024

Nice graphics (supports HDR, which is not common in horse games) but does have texture loading issues common to the genre. Sometimes you will gallop around a corner faster than the bridge around that corner loads. Sometimes the grass is sand is rock is grass is dirt is grass, all while you're standing on it. There is one breed in the base game with two optional breeds as purchasable DLC. This is not a big deal as the real fun part is the glorious variety of coat colors with semi-realistic genetic testing! Some coat types are not present, but most are. The first several horses I looked at: Cremello Dun, Buckskin, Light Grey, Black, Grulla, Perlino Champagne, Red Dun, and Amber Cream. There are completely solid coats and coats that looked like someone sneezed a bucket of paint on them. I loved the sheer variety and it really makes up for not having multiple breeds. Horse care is a classic of the genre, but is well done and not tedious. Wash your horse with a hose (or splash around in environmental water) to get clean. Brush your horse in an extremely simple mini game to look tidy. That's it. You're done. No hoof picks! Huzzah! Care isn't even required. Your horse will have status effects indicating they are filthy but it doesn't change performance. You get more fame for finishing a race with a well groomed horse, but you can get fame other ways as well. Optionally, you can change tack and after a certain point in the plot, you can also change mane and tail styles (from fantasy curls to classic dressage looks). This also helps with the lack of breed options. You can have a classic Western look and a fancy dressage look and fancy braids and it's real fun. I definitely enjoyed this feature. Training horses is used to modify traits that an individual horse has. Traits can be passed on to offspring if a horse with them is bred. Example traits include Sand Lover (is faster on sand) and Forest Hater (dislikes exploring forests) and Vertigo (terrified of heights). Sand Lover is a bonus, no training needed. Forest Hater means you'll want to explore lots of forests with that horse and eventually the trait will go away and the horse will be fine with forested areas. Vertigo is the hardest to train. It requires going to a certain number of high locations, then when the horse panics, petting it to calm it down. One all the locations have been done, Vertigo will downgrade to a fear of heights the horse is willing to work to overcome and you have to visit a few more high locations and pet the horse when it panics. If you do all of them, the horse will no longer have a fear of heights and can be ridden normally without panic in high locations such as cliffsides. Breeding can still pass on traits you trained out, so training is to improve the individual horse. You can combine a lot of good traits with good breeding and have a fearless superhorse that's receives a speed bonus in multiple environments and is extra good at racing and jumping. It's fun and not as hard as it seems when you first start. Breeding is a little weird. You have to give the horses treats and they want a LOT of treats! Normally feeding a horse uses one treat item. Breeding can use twenty of one, thirty of another, and ten of a third for a single foal. So, pick up every food item you see. You will have to dismount, I know it's weird, but you'll need it. Sleeping causes most things to respawn. Materials, food items, wild horse herds, even fame orbs and treasure boxes. It is a useful option for resource farming. Sleeping also causes foals to be born. Some things do not respawn, like any treasure box that contained blueprints or an outfit. They'll still be there, you just don't get anything from them. Since some treasure boxes contain useful resources like wood or apples, it's irritating to have to reopen all of them and just get nothing over and over again. Still, it's only a small pain point. Travel! Yes, you have to ride everywhere. There is fast travel to all four homesteads, but nowhere else. The maps are huge. It will take a while to get places. Do not accidentally sell or breed the horse you are riding because you will be walking to the nearest stable and that might be a heck of a walk. If you get stuck in midair, in the landscape, underground, or anywhere else you can use the pause menu to return to the home area. If you were on foot when this happened, you can whistle for your horse like normal and it will spawn nearby and race to you. This is useful, but frustrating. The most frustrating part of this game is that sometimes the ability to save breaks. This game only has autosave. The game saves when you build something, customize something, or sleep. Mine started erroring on every save attempt after I'd completed the main quest, but before I'd gotten all the trophies. I was able to 100% the game, but I lost so much progress and some high level horses I worked really hard to breed. I have zero desire to do all that work again and it's a real bummer. Overall, one of the best horse games I've played and the only one for the PS5 I've played. I'd recommend it for the PS5 or PC (the Switch has some alarming reviews) and I would caution to manage your expectations. Good luck! Read more
