I have been buying Hot Tools marcel irons for years. If you have hair that won't keep a curl, this is a great iron. It gets really hot and makes nice lasting curls. This barrel is 1.25 inches around which makes a nice soft curl. The iron is the same length as any curling iron and has an extra long cord making it easier to move around the bathroom. After learning how to use a marcel, I can never go back to spring irons again. With marcel grips, you can control the curl so much better and clip the hair much tighter. This is the least expensive marcel I have found and it works like any professional iron. Read more

I bought this curler after using a similar style one at a friend's house. I was overall impressed with the quality of the curler. It heats quickly and maintains its temperature consistently. The setup of the handle and the rotating feature do take some getting used to, but I found that once I adjusted it was actually a far superior way of wrapping my hair onto the iron that saved a good deal of wrist strain. My hair held the curl well and I found the total process took less time once I got used to the handle design. I've owned a few more expensive curling irons and found that this one held up well in comparison. The only con I've found is that the heavier handle can sometimes make balancing the iron on the built-in rest a little precarious. This was easily solved with the use of a silicone mat under the iron so that when it did tip my counter tops were not damaged. The cord is a good length and allows for easy reach for all parts of my hair. I've recommended this iron to a few friends, who also report enjoying the design. I opted for a smaller diameter iron than I usually do because I was finding that my curls were softening a lot as the day went on. Using a smaller diameter solved this issue, as the tighter curls softened to my preferred look as my hair cooled. Read more

This is the best curling iron I have found. The Marcel handle isn't for everyone but for those of us that can handle it, it gives excellent maneuvering. This is my second one. The handle always breaks before the curling iron. I have to replace it about every 4 years but I always buy it again. Read more

I love these irons and have always used this brand(I’m a licensed cosmetologist). Bought this to replace one that I had had for several years that stopped working. Maybe I got a dud but I only used this iron once or twice and it has already stopped heating. The light comes on but it won’t get hot. I’m 15 days past the return window so Amazon gives me no options for help. Read more

The design of these irons is meant to be used by professionals, meaning pointed away from the person holding it toward someone sitting in front of them. It's difficult to explain without seeing it, but while with a traditional spring iron, flipping the iron around to use on your own hair doesn't really matter, with a marcel, it requires you to hold the iron completely backward from how it's designed. There are a lot of other things that make a marcel tricky to use, but this means it's even harder to use on yourself than on someone else. So when people complain about the difficulty, they're not exaggerating. I was able to figure out how to use it reasonably well the first time I used it, but it took me at least a week of daily use to be fairly comfortable with it. I've been using it for months now. For a while I thought it was a good iron, but I didn't really know if it was any better than a standard iron. That's until I forgot it while on a trip and had to borrow an old school iron from a friend. The difference is huge. First, a spring iron is actually a lot of work to use after getting used to a marcel. Second, the control and quality of curl with this iron is so much better. It's definitely worth the cost. If you don't curl your hair a lot or aren't comfortable with a normal iron, a marcel might not be worth it. But if you curl your hair regularly and have decent coordination and hand dexterity, this is a great iron. Read more
