Easy Instructions AND Well Built
I was looking for some options to expand on the functionality of my computer desk. I have an IKEA Fredde desk and recently I saw IKEA sold clamp-on shelf attachments for tables or desks. This had me wondering what else is out there. This is when I came across this product. I had chosen it because unlike many other options that seemed either more focused on dual screen setups this product was designed for a screen and laptop or tablet. This is perfect for my purposes as it would free up space formerly taken up by a monitor, as well as that of a laptop or keyboard. My intended use was for having a setup ideal for plugging in multiple inputs to a monitor while I can also work on the desk. I have a retro computer workstation and use a small multipurpose television so I can plug in HDMI, VGA, RCA, and RF all running to various computers. So to lift the monitor off the desk is great as it frees up space, makes accessing ports easier, and with the flexibility of the neck on this product I can move the monitor up, down or swivel it out of the way if I am using the desk for other purposes. The attachment to screw in a television or monitor is great. I also like the laptop holder. It is a tray that can be angled and is large enough to hold pretty much any size laptop or tablet. Again, this is nice because it frees up so much space. If you don’t intend on using a laptop, this could also be perfect for holding something else like a small gaming console, drum machines or synthesizers, or even just papers. If you don’t want to do any of that one cool thing I noticed is that the laptop tray attaches using the same bracket that is used for monitors and TVs, so you could wire up a couple monitors on top of each other and have a dual monitor setup if so desired. Another really cool option that I was unaware of when I purchased this was that in addition to the clamp-on option, this also has a stationary option where if your desk has a grommet you can attach the the main pole to the desk. The grommet size would have to be large enough, or if you are crafty you could use a hole saw attachment and drill your own but I would much rather use the clamp, as it is very sturdy, which leads me to my final point - the construction. This product arrived in a very organized box. When opened there were two a couple boxes and the laptop try neatly organized. When I opened everything all up everything was bagged and all the tiny bits (screws, nuts, hex wrenches) were all in a labeled bag with letters that correspond to the instructions The instructions were also very well written and detailed, which was something I did not expect. I think my only complaint (which isn’t really a complaint) was that the optional grommet build was in a separate box on the second page but both were visible when I had the instructions opened. I just did not see it at first and it did not impact my desired use but was nice knowing I could in the future, especially if I buy a new desk. The product also feels very high quality. Everything feels sturdy. The clamp, main pole, and even the necks feel heavy and thick. They are all metal and have thick metal screws that tighten with a hex wrench so you can keep things still. No plastic clamps or screws so risk of stripping or breakage seems far less likely and since they are standard sized metal screws, I suppose you could buy replacements at a hardware store. The only construction part I kind of questioned was when attaching the clamp together, it uses three screws but no but to secure them but I don’t see this as being an issue - the screws tighten very well and don’t feel like they are going anywhere. Overall this product is the best deal you could want from something like this. It doesn’t feel like the pieces will slide and flop around once you have it setup and the metal parts are nice and strong so no worry they will bend or break. While I am using an older television with this, newer monitors and TVs have gotten so light that I imagine you could use this with a pretty large screen. If I ever needed a dual or quad screen setup, this would definitely be an option. I almost forgot to mention cable management. This product also has plastic clips that go on the arms and tools to not only attach cables but it also has spots to store the hex wrenches for future adjustments. I did experience an issue with the monitor and tray tilting forward, even when no added weight was added. While the instructions just mention to tighten a bolt, it still tilted heavily so I removed the bolt to reveal there are two washers on either side of the mount. Each washer has two small indentations that line up with two holes on the mount. On the inside of the mount there is a plastic piece that has multiple holes. It looks as if this is to line up with the indentations and when you tighten the bolt they keep the monitor in place. What I had noticed was that they were not big enough and so the mount would move regardless of position. I tested with removing the two washers and instead wrapping a paper lip through the holes at the desired position to prevent the plastic piece from moving. When I reassembled the mount it worked and the monitor stayed in place. Read more
