This radio looks nice, with a sleek and modern shape, and works well enough for local and semi-local stations. But I ordered two and neither is very sensitive on either AM or FM, so they do not receive the more distant stations. Sound quality is fine for a radio this size. DSP chip makes tuning somewhat fussy (you have to move the thumbwheel slowly to catch all available signals), but DSP chips are becoming nearly universal on these pocket radios and these DSP tuning characteristics are found on any radio with an analog tuner paired with DSP chip. If you are looking for a low-priced small radio with better performance in receiving weaker, distant stations, consider the QFX R-39 or the very similar Supersonic SC-1080BT. Both are about the same size and price as this Kaito yet offer better reception plus shortwave, MP3 playing via USB drive or Micro SD, and your choice of Bluetooth on the Supersonic or a flashlight on the QFX. For a pocket radio without a DSP chip, look at the Sony ICF-P26. But, again, this Kaito KA230 may suit your needs perfectly if you are looking for a radio that’s going to work fine for receiving stronger, nearby stations. Read more
I received my new Kaito KA230 yesterday. I really like the little radio. Come to think about it, I haven't had a pocket-style AM/FM radio for several decades! 😳 It takes me back with some pleasant memories. I'm listening to the Astros vs. the Giants on KBME 790 AM (Houston) as I type this. It's fun to listen to a baseball game on a little AM radio. There's something nostalgic about it. And heck, I'm not even a sports fan!! 😲😊 There's just something special about listening to a baseball game on a little AM radio. 👍 I think this is a great little radio for only $12. I'm very pleased with it. Read more
Good form factor. Compact design Fits well in one hand with soft touch grippy coating, Stands well, Sound is OK. Dial Band numbers could be bigger. AM reception is good ! FM reception is OK, Analog tuning dial works well. Runs on two AAs for good run times. Read more
Coming it at $12, this Kaito radio is a winner! Analog tuning with great AM reception. Search my name and the radio's model number on youtube for a full, in-depth video review. Features I like about this radio: * AM reception is Krazy good! * Compact design. * Analog tuner. * Headphones are pleasing to use on the AM band. Fantastic. * Soft touch enclosure. Yeah, I like it :) * Low profile belt clip. So I don't have to take it off :) * Runs on two AAs, giving it more run time. Features that could be added or improved on: * FM reception. Needs a longer antenna. * Larger numbers on the dial. They are pretty small. Overall a great little radio for its low price tag. I recommend this radio as a solid buy for the AM pocket radio enthusiast. A new favorite for me. Read more
This is a great radio . For 12 dollars it has great sound and a belt clip. Bought a Kaito KA200 for 99 cents more in the past, good radio with a tuning light but the KA230 is a better value.I figure battery life will be outstanding, will see with use. Read more
Be forewarned, the term " Silicon Lab IC " means this is a "DSP" circuit radio. The DSP circuit uses a VCO, (voltage controlled oscillator) so it's quite sensitive to voltage drops that happen when attempting to turn up the volume, some reviews indicate this problem, a conventional, (non-DSP) radio rarely ever suffers from this design flaw inherent to DSP radios. Because radio components degrade over time, the only way to avoid the DSP radio "trap" is to buy a radio made before the mid 2000's decade, but there are some radios that do not appear to have the DSP circuit problem and are relatively new, so if you want to avoid "DSP rip-offs" do a little bit of research into whichever radio you're interested in buying first, that way you avoid the headache of returning or giving away useless radios that you have no way of getting a refund, especially if you didn't buy it from a guaranteed seller.. I bought this portable because I’m an AM Talk Radio enthusiast and wanna listen to the dodgers or polital chatter while doing chores or watering plants. The clip in the back is really handy for attaching to shirt or belt but sadly reception can be a bit spotty for both am and fm. Walking a few steps makes the reception vacillate and staticky. It is a loud unit but not necessarily sharp. I also own the Kaito KA200 (AAA batteries) and despite its diminutive size it has a sharper sound and BETTER reception than this KA230 (AA batteries). The only advantage to this unit is that it has a good sturdy belt clip and because it uses larger batteries it has more radio usage time before its next replacement. A very bad feature is the very small print on the tuning display. You have to strain to tune your radio stations and be in a well-lit área in order to see the display. Its an 🆗 portable radio.
