The Kaloud Lotus II Hookah Bowl heat management device saves me a lot of time from messing with foil. It rests perfectly atop the shisha bowl without any fuss. It’s an elegant and beautiful addition to my hookah set. It’s really quite heavy so be careful placing it atop a very tall hookah, especially if your hookah is a little tippy like my last one. (Narrow base plus super tall, then add top heavy; look out for disaster! ) This Lotus II hmd is well vented and has a hi/low track system in the base for the perfect coal burn. The coals don’t suffocate. They burn completely without issue or fuss. I do wish it held a little more coal but another can be added when the first couple burn down some. I only fit one disc or two squares to start so not as many as I like. The included handle is great for lifting the lid while it’s hot affording you the opportunity to add more coal as needed. Unfortunately, there’s no way to remove the hmd when you are done until it completely cools down. That’s really the only negative I have here. Overall, a beautiful addition to the hookah party! This heat management device is absolutely gorgeous. I ordered the gold version. I used the Kaloud Lotus I for years and, while I liked that device, the coals did tend to black out on the bottom due to lack of airflow. My current main HMD is the Shishabucks Stratus so I wanted to test the Lotus II against that specifically. So how does the Lotus II stack up against the previous version (Lotus I) and comparable HMDs (Shishabucks Stratus)? Look/Feel - The Lotus II screams quality. It's heavy, it's beautiful, it would be an amazing gift for a hookah owner. The packaging is premium (gold & black) with cute little blurbs about being made with the help of unicorns. It's much heavier (and prettier) than both the Lotus I and Stratus devices. After my session the Lotus II was very easy to clean. I've found that both the Lotus I & Stratus have issues when cleaning where they don't always look 100% clean especially on the bottom of the HMD that was closest to the shisha. Heat Management - The addition of little nubs on the bottom of the Lotus II helps keep coals from blacking out. It also has more vents than the Lotus I. Coals burn much slower in the Lotus II than the Stratus. I've also found the device takes longer to 'heat up' than the Stratus. The Stratus makes a bowl ready to go in less than a minute - the Lotus II you need to wait ~5 minutes for the shisha to heat up. The flip side to this is the shisha burns much more slowly and evenly with the Lotus II. You can comfortably fit two coals (flats - regular size) in the Lotus II. You could add a third if you are impatient but it will need to start out standing on end. The Lotus I, by comparison, could hold three flats in the proper position. The loss of real estate on the Lotus II is due to the addition of more airflow and the little nubs - this change is 100% worth it. Bowl Management - There are no down-facing holes on the Lotus II - this keeps ash from getting into your bowl. This is wonderful and makes changing coals/adding coals very simple. The included grabby tool easily removes the top dome for coal access. And here comes my one issue with this HMD - I can't easily find a way to remove the bottom portion (where the coals sit) from the bowl while it is hot. There are no places/holes to easily grip with tongs and it is too hot to remove with bare hands. I might be totally missing something obvious (and I'll update my review if I figure it out) but I end up fumbling the bottom (coal holding) portion of the HMD with hot hands in an attempt to remove it to pack a new bowl or knock some of the ash out. I'm baffled this wouldn't be considered by the company because the top portion of the lotus (dome) comes off SO easily with the included tool.
