This is not our first LaCie product, and it won't be our last. LaCie's very solid design and attractive robust enclosures, drives, and connectivity options are the standard against which i compare all external storage devices. This unit is heavy, i assume largely due to its full-body SILENT heatsink (i.e., no fan). Its 7200rpm 2TB drive is also remarkably quiet. I use SuperDuper to perform smart-copy backups of my primary drive, and rely on LaCie for separate redundant storage. While not specifically a portable unit, i periodically cycle between two of these every other month from a fireproof Honeywell box. This approach to leapfrogging my backups provides further peace of mind safeguarding our family photos, videos, important files, and so on. Box contained one each: drive, stand/footer with hex key, eSATA cable, USB3.0 cable, and Firewire800 cable. I smile thinking how merely 15 brief years ago this would've cost a gazillion bucks…now just $189 delivered to my front porch. Truly a bargain…thanks again LaCie !! Read more

This is the fourth LaCie d2 external drive I purchased - the first was purchased in 2010. This particular drive connects as a backup to a new laptop with USB-3.0 ports. Out of the box the drive quality is very high; connection a breeze; all cables included; excellent documentation; excellent back-up software (way better than Microsoft or any number of other providers); works with Microsoft Windows (8.x; 7.x; Vista, all Server, MAC OS X, all Linux). Hands down - quality, endurance, quiet and LaCie support - the very best! Highly recommend! Read more

We have two iMAC computers. We had one of these drives for several years used for Time Machine backup. When we bought the second computer we bought another of these drives. The backup drive for the first computer saved the day when the computer failed. Read more

In general, I like the "feel" of LaCie's products and I own several - even though they're rather expensive compared to, say - bare bone drives. I can't ignore the fact that if I look inside the sealed drive to discover which manufacturer's drive is being used, I've voided my warranty. Last week, I got an email from DriveGenius, installed on my system (invaluable software that has saved my a** many, many times through it's warning system) that it had scanned the drive during the night and had discovered 7 bad blocks. It recommended data be backed up and the drive removed from the system. I contacted LaCie and they offered to repair my drive in one of two ways: for $20 they would rush me a reconditioned drive and I could then return my drive within 30 days, or I could send my drive in for repair and wait. I suggested to the rep that, given the unusual nature of the problem -- this being a new drive -- they should replace the drive with another new drive. I was told that wasn't their policy. Given what they charge, I would have expected more. Read more

This is a very flexable device. Speed is critical, so with both eSATA and USB 3.0, I have the best I can get. I had previously been using a similar Buffalo 2TB external HD. Those are good drives, I have several. But for high speed, they only have eSATA. This LaCie has eSATA plus USB 3.0, so I'm switching. Read more

Three years later and the drive died and took my data with it. I'm awarding at least one star because I wasn't smart about backing it up. Mechanism etched right into the media and data recovery company couldn't even salvage what was on there. Will never purchase a LaCie again. Thanks for nothing. Read more

Works perfectly! These are very easy to set up. I am a professional photographer and we go through a lot of these each year at the studio. We've had great luck with these! Read more

This is my fourth LaCie hard drive; two of those are being used in different applications, while this newest one is a clone of my iTunes music library. It will go into rotation with the other drive so that the life of these drives can be used almost indefinitely. I have been using LaCie drives since the 1990s, and would recommend them to anyone who needs mass storage. Read more
