I missed out last year and could only find the Advent calendars from people that stocked up to gouge the rest of us that poorly planned, so I ensured I jumped on one as soon as I found it this year. My four year old loves opening up each new day's door and individually wrapped baggie to see what's next. He was a bit disappointed in the beginning and had to bring some legos over from our collection because with just the one piece it's not too fun to play with, but as the days go by, the fun keeps growing. The extra pieces included in most days are a hit as it allows my four year old to share extras from his city set with my six year old and her friends set (extra pieces there too, so sharing is going both ways). Some nights he's too tired to look at the picture and just understand how the pieces go together to build the day's item (some more complicated than others), but overall it's been pretty amazing to see him take a pile of pieces, build what the picture showed, integrate the scene and play as well as share. My kids do love legos, so that part doesn't hurt at all. Jump on these sets early each year. Read more

This is the second year that my 10 year old, Lego loving son have done the Lego City Advent Calendar and it never fails to disappoint. I bought it in November, as soon as it was available as I didn't want it to be sold out as it was such a huge hit last year. This year, my son who doesn't want to get up for school, was excited every morning just so he can see what was inside his advent calendar for the day. We try to guess first before he opens it. It's one of the highlights of his day and I will definitely get one for him next year again. The items inside are so easy to build and the mini figures that came with it are very cute. The Santa from this year and last year, except it came with an additional accessories, a cookie is the same but we are happy to have an extra Santa plus the sack that he comes with. This is such an awesome idea for Lego!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read more

This is the most creative and ingenious idea for an advent calendar. My daughter is 6 years old and she absolutely loves it - every day she is excited to see what the next surprise will be - up until now we have only seen 14 different toys and they have all been extremely well made and creative. The back of the box comes down with a wintery scenario so my daughter arranges her different legos on the mat and every day that she gets a new toy she re-arranges the setting to tell a different story. In classic lego fashion they are all a little funny and they did not skimp on this at all. The toys that need to be built are simple and each box that you open shows the picture of what the finished toy should look like and my daughter can easily build it based on the picture. This has provided hours of fun for her every day! I highly recommend. Read more

This is our first advent calendar. We wanted to start a new tradition and since we love Legos, this was perfect! My only issue is that if you are new to Lego advent calendars, it would be easy to mistakenly open the entire box and mess up the order of the pieces inside. You are only supposed to cut open the tape that holds the "flap" which is the floor of the city. Also, the numbers are very scattered and it takes me a while to find the flap of the number I'm on. I also wish you opened the flaps counting down to Christmas instead of opening the flap with the number of the corresponding day you are on. Lastly, the flaps are a bit difficult to open. I have to use my nail and gently pull the flap along the perforation. The upside is the cuteness of the little characters and scenes make me forget about all the difficulty I've had. I'll probably upgrade to the Star Wars one next year. Read more

I may have inadvertently started a tradition in my house. I got this for my 6 year old and had no problem getting him up in the morning to get ready for school on any school day in December! He was jumping out of bed to go downstairs and open the latest door. This set also came with a lot of neat unique pieces. He especially wanted some lego food pieces and this set did not disappoint. There's even a Santa on Day 24. My son was already asking about whether I was going to buy one for Christmas 2015. I will suggest if you're going to buy a similar set in 2015, to purchase it early. I got the 2014 set in october for 29.95 and I noticed that as it got closer to Christmas, the price went up. Read more

Pros: fun mini holiday-themed Lego project every day in December! What's not to love? Box is cleverly designed for use and reuse--a flap of the box swings open to reveal a Lego Cityscape backdrop with numbered doors. So exciting! Each day, you help build and populate the holiday city. Cons: the outside of the calendar box reveals most of the surprises that are inside--so they aren't surprises when you open the doors. My preschool-aged son studied his calendar last year before we began and saw what was coming. In future years, I hope this may be solved by a peel-away exterior that leaves the box blank on the outside once it's in use and on display. This is a small concern. I covered my box exterior with colored duct tape this year so we get real surprises. And the flap that poems to show a Cityscape is great. Read more

We have found a new tradition! This is the first time I have gotten this and my 5 year old son is LOVING each new daily creation. It is also a really cost-effective way to get mini figures since at day 18 I think there have been 5 or 6 so far! The only draw back for us is the mass of loose, non-lego pieces that come with some of things being built. Not everything attaches to Lego pieces or the mini figures. Overall, it has been so fun and we will be doing this again next year. Read more
