I built this Balrog book nook in about 4 hours and it’s one of the most satisfying adult LEGO display pieces I’ve done. The build is straightforward but never boring, and the finished result has a lot of depth and texture. The best part is how flexible it is for displaying. Open, it looks outstanding and has major visual impact, with lots of small details you notice up close. Folded, it fits neatly on a bookshelf without taking over the whole space, which makes it easy to keep out year-round. It feels sturdy once assembled and holds its shape well in both positions. As a Tolkien/Lord of the Rings nerd, I was so excited to finally get this set. I completed the build with my daughter, and we absolutely loved putting this one together. The build structure/design is very cool. It's a decent size for what it is worth too. I do not buy LEGO sets for myself, but I couldn't pass this one up. I'm looking forward to Sauron's helmet next (what about the Witchking of Angmar?)! LEGO, if you keep making them, us nerds will keep buying them. Read more

I completed this model with a friend who is a fellow Lord of the Rings fan, but who has built less Lego than I have. We both enjoyed building this model and completed it in an evening, with only a few rough patches (as always, pay attention to the diagrams and the exact orientation of specific pieces if you don't want a headache and a guessing game ten steps later). If manual dexterity is a concern, there are some pieces that are insecurely attached before the components of the model are assembled, which can be frustrating. Instructions were clear and well written, with the charming detail of the progress meter at the bottom of the page being marked with an illustration of the Gandalf figurine you'll build in the first step. Additionally, trivia about the books and films as well as history of previous Lord of the Rings models can be found throughout the directions. However, for a fan of The Lord of the Rings, this is a fun build with clear directions and unique components, and the finished model is a distinctive addition to any bookshelf - put it between your collection of Tolkien's books and your DVD box sets! Love it! Took me (37 year old) about 3.5 hours to assemble, (I know because I had the Fellowship extended edition playing at the same time, got done just as it finished) with 9 bags of parts. The balrog is quite intricate, and takes about 1/3 of the construction time. Folds without any resistance, when you unfold you have to pull the wings back separately, but that’s not a problem. Build quality is good, it feels quite sturdy. I like the mechanism that attaches the balrog to the pillars; it essentially hangs by the back of its wing joins. Since the balrog feet don’t clip into the floor, this is a great way to keep it steady. It’s now on my bookshelf folded, and I love it. Read more

My husband always wanted LOTR Legos but the other sets are so, so expensive. I found this for his Christmas gift and he was ecstatic, and spent ALL of the next day putting it together. It came together fine, would probably be a bit difficult for a young kid to build alone but a nerdy adult man managed just fine (and seeing him so excited was truly adorable). It’s pretty big, super awesome to look at and definitely looks better displayed open. We have it taking up a whole shelf on our bookshelf and we both love it. Very pleased with this purchase.
