A great selection of pieces with lots of minifigures included!

MomathomeFebruary 5, 2015✓ Verified purchase

Son was thrilled to receive this set and had a blast putting it together, he loved that it came with so many minifigures and although he took it apart fairly quickly, he has used these pieces for many other personal creations since. If you have a 'creative' builder who likes to create his own masterpieces, this has a lot of good pieces that could be used for many different building projects! Read more

Great set, goes best with set 79014.

This is a great set. I’ve been a huge Lego fan for five years, and I love Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. So the Lego Hobbit sets we’re one of LEGO’s best ideas. This set is okay on its own. But I would suggest getting set 79014 Dol Guldor Battle first, this set is mainly adding more to the fortress in that set. And giving it more orcs. The two Gundabad orcs are probably my favorite part of the set. They come with long black hair with ears attached to it. Which I like better than the bald Gundabad breed orcs in other sets. The Beorn figure is an odd addition to the set, on account of the fact he never actually enters Dol Guldor in the movies. One big surprise with this minifigure is that his head and hair are one piece, I assumed they would come as two separate pieces, but they’re really one mold. There’s nothing I dislike about it, just thought I’d note that. The swinging axes and battering ram trap is a cool play function, you turn the knobs on the back to swing them out. You can also open the hinged side which has a flick missile in it. Flick missiles don’t shoot well all the time, but they’re still fun to play with. So in summary, good set, goes best with set 79014. A Great Addition to Any Collection

This was a really fun set to build! The style behind the "mountains" were really good. I was a little disappointed to find that Beorn's head is a single piece, and not a mini-figure head with a hair piece. Otherwise this was a great set, and as always LEGO has quality products. The bricks are made very well. Read more

Expensive? Kinda! Worth it? Absolutely!

David TepperJanuary 28, 2015✓ Verified purchase

We purchased this Lego set as a Christmas gift for my 12 year old nephew, who seemingly has everything. However, there is one thing you can never have too many of and that is LEGOS! Let's face it, most toys these days are made out of cheap, thin, brittle plastic, and they are so expensive, such a bad value! At the risk of sounding trite, they don't make 'em like they used to! However, Lego is an exception to that rule. Thank you Lego, for maintaining the same standards of quality and fitment for so many years. It doesn't matter if you have this set or another from 1958, they will still fit together! Yes, Lego's are expensive, but few toys will last as long or give the child as many hours of engineering prowess, spacial skills building, and entertainment than these building blocks. There are a few things I miss from my childhood, one of those is digging through the giant container of Lego's looking for that ONE piece I need to finish my build, making up names for them as I paw at the pile. Very collectible...

TristyJuly 4, 2014✓ Verified purchase

It was a gift for my son; he loves it and this alone makes the expense of the actual product worth it. The fact that the bricks last forever, are well loved by children and adults, and have such a variety of educational applications for teaching concepts and skills in every areas of development, all stand alone as justification for buying any reasonably priced Lego set. The collectible nature of the LOTR and Hobbit Lego sets do make them more expensive, but also makes them ultimately more valuable to the die hard Lego/JRR Tolkien fans. My son is both: thank goodness he can't access his college funds just yet! Read more

Fun but...

S. QuestFebruary 7, 2014✓ Verified purchase

Very fun and relatively easy to build, but there were a few steps that weren't clear in the directions. Also, while I understand that including Beorn is a major attempt at additional merchandising, he was not in this part of the film and I dislike the inaccuracy of him being included. I'm picky like that. Read more

It's good. But way overpriced.
