This is the second time we've ordered this brand of mattress protector because it is such good quality for a reasonable price. It is thick enough that it doesn't tear easily like others we've tried. The elasticized sides seem like they would fit a very deep mattress, but they also fit our very shallow mattress (~ 6") like a glove. The waterproof backing material is PUL (polyurethane laminate), the same material that is commonly used as a diaper wrap over cloth diapers. Some may disagree, but I consider this material safe. It is soft and doesn't make an annoying crinkling sound. The top material is 100% cotton. We have been using this mattress protector for a child who is learning not to wet the bed. We don't want to have to wash it every time she wets, so we turned it upside down on the bed so that the waterproof layer is on top. Then, we put towels directly on top of the mattress protector, followed by her fitted sheet. The towels absorb most of the fluid so that we're not pushing the mattress protector to its limits, and since the waterproof layer doesn't absorb any fluid, we can just wipe the protector off with a damp cloth and leave it on the bed, good as new. This system works well for us. As with any waterproof mattress protector, I would recommend not to wash it too often or put it in the dryer, because this can eventually cause the waterproof layer to become brittle and tear. EDIT: Finally got a chance to see if it really is waterproof and it is. I also wanted to update this review when I had a chance to wash it as well, since some reviews said that it was ruined after washing it. Washing it didn't ruin it or damage it in any way. The only problem I had was it said to tumble dry it on low/air dry. I did that and it was in the dryer for almost a hour without drying it (in a brand new dryer). So I put it on high heat for 20 minutes and prayed that wouldn't ruin it. It still didn't dry all the way, so I put it on for another 20 minutes with high heat and it was perfect. I read all the reviews and I was back and forth on this for a few days before I finally decided to take the plunge and order it. Most people say it is truly waterproof, but I haven't tested out that yet. Our son comes and gets in bed with us a lot, and sometimes he leaks terribly through his diaper in the night and we just bought a brand new, king size bed and I didn't want it ruined. Still haven't been able to test that out to see if it will keep even minor moisture away from the mattress, because low and behold, the minute we put it on the bed, our son hasn't made any nighttime appearances. lol But what worried me most was the fact that a few people said in their reviews that after putting it on their bed, that it made them extremely hot and sweaty at night. I get extremely hot at night all on my own, and I sure didn't want to add something else to the bed that would cause me to be even more hot. But I took into consideration that the majority of people said it didn't do that, so I went with that. Once we put it on the bed, I was happy to find that it fit very well, and didn't change the feel of the bed at all. It doesn't make any noise when you move around, and I was very glad to find out that it didn't make me hotter at night. Another plus to it....after we put it on the bed, our fitted sheet stopped popping off the mattress as well, so it's an added bonus that it's keeping the sheets in place. it actually feels very nice and does not added any noise at all. I am a little wearing on its water proofness but it does appear to be of good quality. The item is designed with a soft cotton type top with a very thin plastic bottom that should make it water proof. I'll let you know if my dumb dog tries to pee on the bed again with how well it works. Also the soft top makes sheets glue to the bed which is awesome. My wife and i are hill-billying it up until our new bed set somes in with just a fleece sweet on top of the bed and the thing does not move at ALL!!! it feels like the fleece sheet has Velcroed to it which is awesome. Though i don't know if this was noted on the product page it does not cover the entire bed like a vinyl cover. It acts like a mattress cover? Good quality cover. these are indispensable for maintaining the quality of your expensive mattress and seem to be critical for foam mattresses if you plan to get full life out of it. We bought this to replace an existing cover of the same brand. While the claimed warranty is nice, I dont think we have ever had one last to the full warranty period. Maybe 5 or 6 years we get out of it before the material wears thin in spots and starts to get stained. But replacing it once or twice in the life of the mattress is a small price to pay for the protection it provides for the mattress. We originally bought the mattress in 2011 and it still looks brand new because we have kept a cover on it since day one. The Lucid cover is much nicer than the cover we had originally. Fits better, no obvious holes in stitching areas, protects from spills and stains without being overly "plasticy" to the touch or when laying on it. It has saved us from a couple accidents from our kids, as well as prevented the stains that occur on bedding from normal wear and tear.
