Excellent Mouse For What It Is Designed For.

RadimirApril 20, 2016

I've owned this mouse for about a month. If you're looking into this particular model, it must be because of the design of the device. The actual mouse itself is about six centimeters by eight centimeters and features the left and right mouse buttons, a scroll wheel, and a central knob that can be shifted up and down. The rest of the mouse is a plastic frame with a plastic palm rest. So, when looking at the device, I gave it five stars because the mouse does exactly what MadCatz intended for it to do. This is a quality mouse made to look different, work well, can be used for gaming, and comes with layouts for 3D printers to make a palm rest. I played through Half Life 2 on this mouse, because it's Half-Life 2. The R.A.T. 1 functions as well as any mouse made in that day, except that the weight is very light, as to be expected. This does take a day or two to adjust to, and works perfectly fine, as any mouse should. When adjusting to the weight and feel of the mouse the Carbine was demolished in no time. What this is NOT, is an EXTREME GAMING mouse. You won't find multiple sensitivities on the sensor, memory for multiple profiles, a group of buttons made for macros, or a sensitivity kill switch. This mouse is made to be simpler and has enough buttons to do what you need. So, please don't judge the mouse for what it is not designed to do. The mouse is plug and play with additional drivers and software that is available on MadCatz's download webpage. The software installation requires either the 32 or 64 bit version of .NET Runtime 2.5, which can be downloaded here: For 32 bit - [...] [...]Once the software is installed, you can then map any button or shortcut for six of the seven different inputs, the left mouse button will always be the left mouse button. You can also create your own macros if you want. Everything is software based, so nothing is stored on the mouse to swap between devices. But, being practical, the knob under the mouse wheel can be set for 'forward' and 'back', meeting the basic mouse-like requirements. This mouse, I would recommend for all gamers, except for those who are actually in the professional competitive scene. Those kinds of gamers need the profiles, sensitivity settings, and macros to compete. With that group excluded, that means the mouse is great for the 99% of gamers who don't professionally compete. Even the shape isn't very good, where the back is like high heel shoes

virualJanuary 6, 2016

As a mouse, its an ok device. Its a bit small for my hands, way to light for my liking, over all I can get a nicer feeling mouse for less. Even the shape isn't very good, where the back is like high heel shoes, easy to side to either side. I primarily got this device because it sells itself as something that can be customized with 3D printing. Their site even has STLs for new palm rests. Now comes the biggest problem with their 3d printing feature, its not designed for consumer 3d printing in mind. There is limitations and compromises that a designer has to consider when printing on a FDM with PLA. Non of their palm rests can be easily printed without tons of support and loads of clean up and even then, it doesn't fit well because the tolerances are too tight and to small that the shapes don't print out correctly. If you read up further, they expect you to pay a service to 3d print the handrests for you that use industrial grade printers. This kind of defeats the whole "You can customize your mouse through 3d printing" selling point. Another thing I'm upset about is that no STLs are available for its frame. I spent a good day trying to recreate it to come to the conclusion that its not feasible with a FDM, the arc where the mouse wire goes through is too thin with a horrible overhang. On top of that, the bottom of the mouse does a lot of unnecessary angles that just makes it ever harder for makers to try to recreate a new base for it. That part is hidden away, no need to try to make it all sleek and pretty. It should be made with straight lines and 90/45 degree angles, not 111 and 124 that managed to get right with some trial and error. Then the back of the mouse has all these odd shapes and bends etc that just adds on to the difficulty of creating a frame for it. So all in all, if you were hoping for an easy 3d printable mouse, this is definitely not it. Mad Catz designers have no clue how to design for consumer 3d printing devices. I could of designed a better module then what they did. All in all, if you really really want a mouse you can customize with 3d printing, you have to be really creative on how to put something together using the RAT1. I have some ideas that I'm going to explore, i payed for this thing might as well give it a good attempt to customize it. Check thingiverse from time to time, you might find a FDM friendly frame from me at some point. Read more

50g mouse with a 3320 sensor pretty special for the price and a collectors item

RobertAugust 17, 2019

Great mouse for the price point, was the lightest mouse before Finalmouse could even spell lightest mouse. The build is alright but most of you won't like the shape and the fact that it lacks side buttons which doesn't bother me. The down points of this mouse are slight button input latency a bit worse then some of the top mice out there, the cable is another down point but can be upgraded to paracord but for the price it's an excellent overall built mouse. The sensor is a 3320 and is one of the most accurate old sensors I have felt especially with how they position the sensor further forward it's just great. The mouse feet are also really nice for stock mouse feet nearly on par with my Glorious Model O mouse. I mostly bought this mouse just to add to my collection because it's the ORIGINAL RAT1 not the watered down revision or RAT1+, this one was the best of the lot. I appreciate how well M+L do dealings with their clients and I'll surely buy from them again. A really nice company with competitive prices and they shipped to South Africa in said promised time ;) Read more

Lightweight but that’s about it

shoppingsavyFebruary 5, 2019

The cable made this very hard to like, the mouse is too light to the point where the cable can ruin the motion. It feels cheap so don’t expect anything fancy at $10. Very uncomfortable to use Read more
