I bought some upper-mid tier matcha before, but I wanted to drink it frequently without spending a lot per ounce. I figured I would buy a couple of the larger bags with good reviews to see how they compared. I'm glad I did. the three I compared are: Matcha DNA Certified Organic Matcha Green Tea (12 Ounce) Starter Matcha Green Tea Powder 12oz Tmatcha Matcha Green Tea Powder 8oz as soon as I spooned them out onto paper, it was obvious. the DNA looked grey and old. the Starter matcha seemed ok, and the Tmatcha looked better than the mid tier I bought for 8x the price. Taste-test. I pre-warmed a couple shot glasses, then poured exactly 1/2 teaspoon of matacha into each, then filled them up with 89°c water. I stirred each and sipped them. the taste followed exactly with the visual. the DNA was grose, the Starter matcha was "meh", and the Tmatcha was smooth, flavorful and had a sweet aftertaste. I think you could easily find better matcha than Tmatcha, but not for the price. if you want upper-mid tier matcha for a cheap price, Tmatcha is definitely the way to go. the Matcha DNA is not terrible for the price, but there is better out there. So I was really excited about this because I'm a broke college kid who loves matcha very much and have spent too much money on it. This is probably the cheapest thing you can find on the internet and I thought why not just give it a try what could go wrong? I bought this on 3/19 and I started using it since 3/22, just a little cup a day. Like the other reviewers say, it's not particularly good texture but its taste resembled matcha which was good enough for me. Two days in I started to feel itching all over my body. I do not have any known allergy and I normally eat everything, so I was kind of confused (until I read that the other reviewer who also had the same problem). I thought that's bad enough but it just got worse: last night I started having intolerable stomach ache, threw up 3 times in the middle of the night, woke up with bloat and pain in stomach. I initially thought something else caused it. I was not able to poop it out either and for hours it just hurt. I also had feverish symptom and during all this time I wanted to vomit. Finally after struggling with it for hours, at noon, I pooped pure liquid. Dirt green liquid. Same color as the matcha powder. None of it was absorbed or digested and the texture of my stool is literally powdery water. Thank goodness Amazon refunded me so I can use the money to buy medicine to hold me over, but I am still not thrilled to be sick during midterm week... If you're really into pain and diarrhea, or itchy skin, or vomit, then this is the thing for you! Or if you wanna quit your matcha addiction. In my own case I probably won't touch matcha again for a long time. If you want to still consume matcha, I'd say spend a little more money on finding good quality ones instead of spending tons of money buying laxatives. Thanks for reading! Have to go vomit now. Although you can find some Bargains on Amazon which are undoubtedly worth the price, I have to admit this is not one of them; and the old adage you get what you pay for applies here. I am relatively new to matcha. I have had ceremonial grade as well as culinary grade. Out of desperation I went to my local Fry's grocery store and bought their own Private Selection brand of matcha, which was more expensive than this 16 oz tin, and was only 4 oz. That said, I knew something was up with this brand as soon as I opened the can for the first time. The smell hit me. It did not smell like matcha at all. What came out of the can was almost rancid oily smelling, and reminded me of when I was young almost 40 years ago when I experimented with oil painting. As soon as I smelled this it reminded me of my old oil paints. Not one to give in so easily, as I have had things smell bad before, yet taste pretty darn good, I decided to make some matcha immediately even though I still had some of my Fry's/Kroger brand left. I have to say this tasted exactly like it smelled. I should have known better to buy a cheap brand of matcha, but I figured reviews can be a valuable tool in assessing a product. Not this time. I have no idea why there are so many good reviews, unless perhaps I just got one of the worst batches that they have ever sent to market and I was just one of the lucky ones. I'm stuck with a large tin of matcha that will probably last me for months and it is disgusting. I cannot in all good conscience recommend this brand of matcha to anyone, based on this purchase. Previously I bought Jade Leaf matcha latte mix, which is simply matcha mixed with sugar and no other additives. That brand smells like and looks like matcha. It also tastes like matcha. This brand does not. This color is a muddy greenish and the taste matches the color. If you want to try this brand, I beg you to please by the smallest amount you can possibly buy before splurging on a larger container. It is possible that somebody likes this matcha. How they can, is beyond me, but I am not one of them. If you are one of the people that possibly could like this matcha I do not want to discourage you from buying it, but I simply do not recommend it to the vast majority of people buying matcha. Thank goodness it was cheaper than most, because at least I didn't lose as much money as I could have. I will probably get Jade Leaf matcha next time, in my quest to search for the best reasonably priced matcha. So far the Jade leaf and even the Fry's / Kroger brand is better than this. Thanks for your time. I hope I helped someone with my review. Read more
