I am a US Army NCO, and have NOT had good experiences with electric shavers in the past. They either burned my skin, were a chore to clean, didn't give a good shave, couldn't stand up to use in the field....or all of the above. This thing though, I'm duly impressed. decided to give electrics another shot, I hate traditional razors. A year ago I bought this with full expectation that I would have to drop a few hundred bucks to find what I was looking for, thinking the Max-T would prove the "get what you pay for" idiom once and for all. I happily admit that I underestimated it. This shaver immediately earned permanent space in my kit. the bad: - one of the 3 branded center caps on the razor screens popped off within a month or so, but honestly because it's recessed, it has not affected it's performance at all. the good: - Super easy to clean! This is a huge deal. If it were a pain in the ass, the shaver would have probably gotten tucked in a drawer & forgotten by now. Opens up wide, comes apart easily, I use canned air to knock off the bulk of the hair, then dunk the blades & screens in shredder oil. after wiping everything off & blowing out the main compartment, goes back together easily. -Great Shave. I've found that other electric shavers can leave patches, this thing gets everything it passes over. Leaves my face smooth, two thumbs up. -Easy to hold. the design makes it easy to keep positive control of the shaver, this makes multi-tasking easy. -Good battery life. Even after a year, this guy will run for a week on a charge. the LCD/LED (whatever it is) battery life (in %) in large bright numbers is super handy for a quick check in any lighting. -Versatile & Fast Charging. Micro USB charge Port! Because I find myself in such a variety of environments, this small feature has made this shaver indispensable. I always have at least two high capacity portable chargers, but if wall power is available, i'll use a regular wall adapter to charge my stuff, the fact that I can charge it without having to worry if I brought some proprietary charging cable means I can always get this thing charged up if I need to. -Stands up impressively to abuse. depending on what is going on, I may not clean this shaver for over a week. I try to clean it every few days just because, but because it is so durable and dependable, I'll push it depending on the sound of the rotary motors. If it squeals, it means I need to make some time for some TLC. I know thats not how you should treat machines, but I know it can take it. There are other features, but these are the most pertinent to me. I dont really use it in water, so I can't speak too intelligently about that. the mustache trimmer works fine, feel like that's pretty standard with most shavers though. I bought this shaver over a year ago and I am writing this review now because I believe that users want to know not just how their purchase does when unboxed, but also how it performs after a period of use. I suspect that many users reading a review of a rotary-head shaver that is NOT a Philips-Norelco shaver want to know how this relatively new brand compares with that well-established one. And the answer is: pretty favourably. Indeed, it is my conclusion, after over a year of daily use, that the Max-T shaver is superior in every significant way to more expensive Philips-Norelco models. Let’s take a look. Pros • Closeness of shave. Even a year on, the Max-T shaves as close as all Philips-Norelco shavers that I have used over the years, and closer than most. • Charge use per shave. I shave my full face except for a moustache, and each shave uses about 5% of the total charge. Sometimes less. I can’t complain about that. • Charge remaining indicator. While the precision of a percent value charge remaining indicator is probably overkill, having a clear charge remaining indicator is a very useful feature that is simply not available on the lower-end, but still more expensive, competitor machines. You know, you can plan, when to charge the shaver. This avoids the embarrassment of having no charge in your shaver when you most need it to function. Additionally… • Corded operation (operation directly from the mains power). You can shave from the mains when the shaver is out of charge. This was a feature I particularly looked for in a shaver as I had experienced enough occurrences of having shavers that ran out of charge and were unable to operate – particularly base-mount shavers. Note that you can’t get the shaver to work from the mains when it is at absolutely 0% charge. You need to first charge it to 1% for operation-from-the-mains to work. This takes about a minute. I mention this so that you’ll know not to give up when the shaver at 0% charge won’t operate immediately from the mains. • Recharge time. I’ve tested this by emptying the shaver to 0% charge and recharging from there to full. It takes just under 65 minutes to get to 100% charge. This piece of information as-is isn’t useful in real-life scenarios but it does give an idea of how quickly you can rescue the shaver if it runs out of charge. • Micro-USB charger. If you travel a lot, it’s nice to have a shaver that doesn’t need a dedicated charger with that extra weight. You just use a micro-SB charger that you might have with you for another device. Since charging from empty to full takes only an hour or so, this is totally practical. • On-off button lock. You can toggle a lock on the on-off button by holding it down for three seconds. While not being absolutely foolproof, this feature greatly reduces the likelihood of your shaver being inadvertently activated while you are travelling. • Noise. The shaver is quiet. When I first switched it on I wondered if a shaver with such a gentle buzz would have the power to cut through my thick stubble. But I needn’t have worried. • Design. This is an old-school styled, corded/cordless shaver that does not have an interchangeable head. I guess this is personal preference, but I didn’t want a base-charge shaver because I wanted it to operate from the mains if necessary. And I didn’t want an interchangeable head shaver because all too often those heads come off in the middle of shaving, casting stubble dirt and shaver head parts everywhere, usually where they are hardest to reach, and usually when you are in a hurry. So the simple old-school design suits my preferences well. Cons • The three little metal logo stickers that were stuck to the centre of each shaver head have all come off, together with the little glue blobs that adhered them. This doesn’t affect the shave at all, but it does raise questions about T-Max’s quality control process. But since nothing else has gone wrong with the shaver over twelve months, I can let this go. Summary If you are looking for a corded/cordless shaver that does not have an interchangeable head, you can’t go wrong with the Max-T. A great value device. Read more
I have been using my MAX-T electric shaver for about two weeks so I cannot comment on its long term reliability. Thus far it slightly exceeds my expectations. However, I have yet to find an electric shaver that shaves as well as a blade and this shaver is no exception. (I have a fairly heavy beard that has turned gray. I typically use a blade a couple times a week when I wear a suit and an electric shaver when I don't have to dress up.) The pop-up trimer works as expected. The shave is not as good as my 20+ year old Norelco gave me, but this shaver is a better choice than the new Norelco that disappointed me. (If the MAX-T shaved like my old Norelco I'd give it five stars. If the new Norelcos saved as well as the old ones I'd use a Norelco.) I'm getting a closer shave after using the MAX-T a few times than I did initially; I am not sure if the shaver has a break-in period or if my beard needed training. It works as well shaving wet or dry and corded or cordless. The battery level indicator is a nice feature that Norelco doesn't offer, especially since some Norelco shavers only operate while using their battery. One can economically replace the entire head instead of just the blades, which is a plus for those like me with arthritis degrading their manual dexterity. I selected the usb model (something else Norelco doesn't offer) as it is better suited for charging while car camping, taking road trips, etc. The usb model is priced a few dollars less than the 110v model, but the savings is offset by having to purchase a 110v wall socket adapter for the usb cord because an adapter does not come with the usb model. The MAX-T costs less than similar Norelco shavers. It appears to me that Norelco has some catching up to do. Read more
