I got into DE shavers with a common starter from Walmart. I appreciate double edged shavers because I have thick hair and multi blades clog very easily. With that said I liked mine and after a year or two my basic shaver was falling apart so I decided to upgrade. First using this I noted the solid and slightly heavier feel, and obvious quality but it was the shave that impressed me. At first I thought it was entirely too gentle, not realizing how rough the other brand had actually been, but then noted I could shave downwards and upwards with ease. It was when I finished and noted not a single usual few nick spots or any burn what so ever when I applied some aftershave that I realized what a quality shave it was! I felt zero burn and not a single knick or raw spot even shaving both ways. Highly recommend Read more

If you can afford it buy the Merkur 34g instead of the 34c. Both work well. I own a Merkur 34c ( chrome) and this Merkur 34g(gold). Both are identical except for one physical attribute; the gold plating. The gold plating makes this one a work of art and the most eye-pleasing de razor I own. Be gentle with gold plating as it is very thin and will wear off quickly. only use micro fiber towels and dish soap to clean. No metal polish please as this would quickly wear off the plating. 10/10 rating. βββββ-Wet-Shave Process-. wash face with soap, dry the face, use a pre-shave oil and apply six drop of it soften beard stubble. gently masage oil onto stubble. Start making lather with a synthetic shave brush. I use Proraso Shaving Cream. I've been using a safety razor for a little over a year and this particular Merkur razor is the 4th razor I've bought so far. The others are the Merkur slant bar, Merkur classic 3 piece and a 1939-47 Gillette Fat Handle Tech from Razor Emporium. Apparently I have small bumps around my jaw and mouth that can't be seen, but that a razor will cut through and cause bleeding. The slant razor is supposed to be good for certain things, but a razor that takes a certain amount of skill to master due to its tendency to cut the skin. I had a lot of problems with that razor nicking me so I had to give it up. The Merkur classic 3 piece is great razor that didn't give me any problems nicking my face. I use it for business travel since I need something reliable that won't make me walk to the hotel lobby with a bloody face. I bought the Gillette since I wanted something with a classic look. I paid twice what the Merkur's cost and it definitely wasn't worth it. Every time I shaved I would cut myself in 3 or 4 places. This morning I shaved with the gold Merkur classic 2-piece for the first time and I think it gave me the best shave I've had since I started using safety razors. I'm used to having to go over my face twice when I've gone more than a few days between shaves, but this razor handled a 7 day beard with only one pass and no nicks. Perhaps the blade had something to do with it as well. I normally use Feather razor blades, but I recently bought the sampler pack of 2 blades from a number of different companies from around the world. Today I was using a blade from Bic. Read more

This gorgeous two-piece safety razor is my first real, metal safety razor. Switching from disposable, hot pink, overpriced, plastic, multi-blade, nick-inducing Venus Gillette razors, I expected a big learning curve with this one. However, it's so simple to use, elegant and well-weighted. Upon my first full time using it in the shower, I had a nice complete, clean shave without a single nick! As a not so overly aggressive razor, it's ideal also for delicate regions. I'm absolutely in love with this gorgeous, effective, life-changing razor and want to get everyone I know and care about one of these as a gift! I wasn't paid for this review; I just really, really love this classy, effective razor and cannot stop telling my friends about it! Read more

I bought my first Merkur, a 34C, in college in the late 70's. I still have that razor and it's probably my most-used razor over the past 40 years. I found this in a department store; this was when everyone was going cartridge razor crazy. I have a half-dozen over Merkur models and enjoy most of them. However, I saw recently that Merkur had had to declare bankruptcy and that their future is uncertain (though I think someone will buy them). So, I ordered this 34g, which is simply a gold-sheathed 34c. Exactly the same razor. Therefore, when I opened it, lathered up and shaved with it, it was like an old friend. I don't like Merkur-brand blades, just not my taste, but when I swapped to an Astra, it was smooth sailing. I don't have a 'Fred Flinstone' beard, being blonde, so I don't need the most aggressive razor around. I never cut myself with the model 34; it's just the right balance of aggression for me even without adjustability. For my Merkur adjustables, I always keep them on either '1' or '2' anyway. There's a reason that this is likely the most popular DE razor in the world. It's just a great all-rounder. Additionally, rather than 'butterfly door' razors, this is two-piece, easy to keep clean without a mechanism to gum up. Every few months I just take the top off and run an old toothbrush over the contact surfaces. I really hope Merkur is able to continue as a company, as they began in the 19th century. Whether chrome finish or this gold finish, hard to go wrong with a 34. Read more
