This was a gift for my gamer nephews (I'm a gamer also; for 40 years now). They love it very much as does their Dad. They play at all hours of the day. They really get a kick out of Abobo's animations and sfx. He's one of the many classic characters you can choose to use. The game lets you pick from the heroes as well as villains from the game's four decade history. It is two player co-op if you choose (I forgot to ask if there is a versus mode). The graphics are sprite based; in the style of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. Cute, cool, and well done. Well, they're having a blast with it. I'll probably get myself a copy one day. It's on many platforms, so whatever current systems you have should have a version you can buy. Read more
This is a fun game. A lot of beat-em ups are boring but this game has the right amount of skill and strategy to rise above most of them. It harkens back to the days when Streets of Rage was the best we had. I recommend this game especially if you have someone to play with. The PS5 version has online play but unfortunately, I have yet to see anyone else playing this, waiting for another player. Easily worth $20 bucks. Read more
I've been a big fan of Double Dragon for many years. I grew up playing the NES games, the arcade games, the SNES games, and even playing the oddball Neo Geo fighting game....and yes, D.D. Neon and Double Dragon 4 as well. So, I was thrilled to hear that new one was coming out. Double Dragon 4 wasn't too well-received, but I enjoyed it for the cheap game it was. I was hoping for something a bit bigger, and more fleshed-out, with this one. Fortunately, it is. One can tell that the team putting this game together was spirited, and wanted to make something special - For the most part, I think they did. Still, this game wasn't what I was expecting. It LOOKS like Double Dragon and it SOUNDS like Double Dragon. It even has those somewhat-frustrating platforming sections, random weapon grabs, super-moves (similar to those in Double Dragon 2 but far easier to pull off), and almost all of the characters. But, it doesn't really play like any 2.5 brawler I've played before, and it takes some getting used to. For one, Double Dragon really isn't known for being the fastest brawler. There is a sort of hidden flow and rhythm that goes with Double Dragon games, and this one has its own. Some of the DNA is in there, but the control scheme is quite different, the execution of moves is simplified, and the tag-team option really shakes things up. That said, the moves, while awesome, lack a bit in variety. For example, Billy and Jimmy only have one technique or combo they can do when grabbing an enemy. In most Double Dragon games, you could at least choose to throw or knee the enemy once grabbing them (in Double Dragon 2 and Super Double Dragon, you could do far more than that). Edit: There are additional throw commands with some characters, including Billy and Jimmy - it took me a while to find them. These can be done with the circle button and backwards from facing direction plus circle button. It sort of makes me wish it had the variety of moves in Super Double Dragon. That said, once I realized that this was its own game, I grew to appreciate it way more. First of all, the tag team system requires switching of characters, which technically doubles your move-set. There is also a run button for enabling extra moves and movement. The specials for each character are unique, and few characters play or feel the same.... and what's more, there are tons of characters. I think there are 14 in all, though it will take some time to unlock all of them (I'm still working on unlocking the final character, at he costs 50 "tokens"). Speaking of tokens, they are earned by playing through the game. Expect to have lots of replays. Another thing I like, is that the game has some rogue-lite elements. This isn't to the point of being annoying, but ensuring that no play-through is exactly the same. It does wonders for replay value, and keeps things from getting stale. As far as the graphics go, they are an acquired taste, but look FAR better in action on my big-screen tv. And the music is spot-on. Rockin' original tunes and remixes from many of the games, even some from Double Dragon 2 and Super Double Dragon, plenty from the first game too. The music is just awesome, and the sound effects are great. I don't want to forget to mention, that while the combat is slow-ish compared to many modern brawlers, it allows for one to strategize - learn to go with the pace, use the timing to your advantage, and you may understand why they made it that way. It's easy to fall in to the groove after a few hours in. So yeah, if you go expecting something familiar, but quite new, you'll be okay. If you're expecting a retread though, you may be disappointed - this is a new evolution for Double Dragon. Ways this game could've been better - more variety of throw/grapple techniques, a few more stages, add online co-op - no online co-op, for DOUBLE DRAGON?, SERIOUSLY? Pros - fun gameplay with cool mechanics and nice punchy sound-effects, banging music, fun characters with lots of variety, lots of unlockables and incentives to replay, rogue-lite elements and RPG-upgrade system add layers of depth to the game rather than becoming a detriment, game gets way more fun with a 2nd player in the room. Double Dragon is AWESOME! It plays like the old Nontendo version but with current gen graphics and has a kick ass story and non-stop action from the start. I've only beat a couple of levels but what I have seen so far ROCKS! πΈ If you like throwing garbage cans, knives and other things@your opponents to defeat them then go to Amazon and BUY IT! Also check out Streets of Rage for PS4. It has the same vibe. Enjoy! Read more
