A Well Made Shoe Well Worth Buying

Michael F. Harrington, Sr.August 13, 2025✓ Verified purchase

I am a diabetic with peripheral neuropathy. These shoes are the most comfortable ones I have ever worn, and very durable, to boot. These are my third pair. My first two pairs are 5 years old and show very few signs of wearing out. The flat, wide soles with squared edges and squared heels keep my feet from rolling or rocking, giving me the support I need while walking or even standing. I am 78 years old, and the hook & loop straps make it easy to cinch them up. I also like that they are made with leather uppers that clean up easily with a little buffing and polishing. I am buying this pair to replace a pair I donated a pair, still in good condition, to my brother-in-law in Mexico. Caution: keep the sticky H&L straps away from certain cloths, blankets, or clothing items because they will grab onto them! Read more

Good shoes for the price.

In order for you to understand why I like these shoes so much requires for you to know a fact about me. I have a disability that affects my walking. I walk toe-heel rather than heel-toe like most people do. I look for shoes with more tred in the front otherwise the shoes will become worn out faster. With normal shoes, they generally have more tred in the rear rather than the front. These shoes have tred that is well balanced from front to back so that means that the shoes will last longer for me. Since I also walk toe heel, I also have a tendency to deal with shoe laces coming undone (even when double-knotted). The Velcro straps are terrific because I don't step on them like laces. However, like other reviewers, sometimes I have issues with getting the straps to reach all the way to the other side. These shoes are also offered in black so I am able to wear them to my job that requires we follow a dress code. I expect them to last for a year and a half, maybe a little longer because of how I walk. On average, most shoes with less tred in the front will last me 6 months to a year at most. So, paying $52 for 12 4E was worth it in my opinion. I wear 4E wide because I wear braces and that doesn't help with overall comfort (read update). Comfort is OK, I recommend changing the sole if your feet hurt because the soles that come with these shoes are made of a kind of nylon. Generally, people will read negative reviews and shy away because they're being careful. When purchasing products online from Amazon, I generally look at the review percentage of all the reviews. If the one star and two star reviews have a percentage added together that are under 20%, I'm more likely to purchase the product. However, before buying, I also look at seller review percentages before ordering. If they one is higher than 90%, I will order the product. Everyone has their own rule of thumb when it comes to ordering a product online but I think every review I post like this one should directly address this. These are great shoes and if they caught your eye, trust your gut because these are good shoes. Update: I have worn these shoes standing for several hours at my job. After 3 to 4 hours, my feet begin to hurt. As a cashier, this is normal. The shoes are showing signs of minor tred wear in the front. Read more

Worth the wait—incredibly comfortable!

It took about a week to fully break into these shoes. Now that I’m used to them, I don't feel any fatigue at all. I used to buy cheap shoes at my local store, but they would wear out in just a month. I'm so glad I switched to these. I saw a review describing them as looking like a "duck bill," and I have to agree! (lol) But that shape is exactly why they feel so good. I will definitely be repeating this purchase when these wear out. Read more

What is the point of sizes if they don't mean anything?

Tony G.February 13, 2016✓ Verified purchase

I have worn the NB MX608 through several versions for many years. I found this was a shoe that fit me and was comfortable. I have a wide foot and I have gout. So when I find something that works, I stick with it. I found the shoe about 5 years ago shopping on vacation and was delighted with it. So when I got back home (we don't have the extensive footwear stores here - Payless, Wal*mart - and various poorly stocked sporting goods or department stores. Forget finding a specific style in multiple widths.) I looked it up on Amazon. Hallelujah they had it! I have replaced this shoe many times through Amazon without incident. This time, they had gone to the (my last order was a v3) v4. When I first looked it up, I found the black/black listing and they didn't have 12 4E, or hardly any other size (I think there were only 3 or 4 sizes listed) so I figured they might be phasing it out. So I searched for "black leather New Balance" size 12 width 4E and this was one of the options I found. I thought the velco straps might be handy (I had previously used the Wally World cheapo shoes with the velcro straps and although they are nothing great, the wide ones would get me by in a pinch). I ordered these. I received them. I tried one on. It is tiny. I figured they pulled the wrong size, so I looked on the box. Says 12 4E. Ok maybe the factory messed up and put the wrong shoe in the box. I looked on the label. It says 12 4E. I tried it on again - maybe the bottom had folded or something. Nope tighter than most D shoes. So I got out a caliper and measured the shoes to see if it was just my imagination. Now I know leather shoes stretch over time, but their soles don't. I measured the maximum width of the sole where the leather joins it. On the MX608 it was 4.685" on the MW577 it was 4.420". That is a difference of 0.265" - over a quarter inch. (For a real idea of how much of a difference this is, take a pair of shoes that fits comfortably and put 4 quarters side by side alongside your foot.) Measuring the sole itself (this is more error prone since some soles taper out more than others but on these two shoes, they look pretty close) I measured 4.935" on the MX608 and 4.600" on the MW577. That is a difference of 0.335". I realize that there is no exact size descriptions in the shoe industry, but I would expect that shoes of a similar style from the same manufacturer would not be off my this much. The good news - Amazon is awesome and they will take them back. I found another listing for the MX608V4 in Black that has the 4E size and ordered it. I don't expect any problems as I went from the original to the V2 to the V3 with no change in fit so I expect the V4 to be fine. Read more
