Podiatrist-recommended, made in the USA, comfortable

JerryFebruary 16, 2026✓ Verified purchase

Before we retired, I developed a nice little case of Plantar Fasciitis. While seeing a podiatrist about it, he recommended I stop wearing the crappy walking shoes I had and get some that would help with my arch support and pronation of the heals. Either that or give him a few hundred bucks for some custom orthotics. He said I should look into the higher-end series of shoes (like 900 or above) from New Balance. I went to a New Balance store, found the 928 Walking Shoes and have been wearing one version or another of them for 10 years now. I like the way they look, they are comfortable and my Plantar Fasciitis, after some physical therapy, has not returned. Plus, while not all New Balance shoes are made in the US, these models are. Since my feet haven't changed size, I find myself getting them through Amazon as the nearest New Balance store is now over an hour from where I live and the local chain stores sell only the lower end (400, 500 & 600) series of New Balance shoes. I recommend them and if you have a podiatrist, they probably do as well. Read more

Longevity

Bobby LaneDecember 18, 2019✓ Verified purchase

I wore these shoes daily for 7 months. They are good on comfort and a good fitting shoe. The sole cushioning is in fair shape and still comfortable. Strings are good, outer sole and heel are in excellent shape. I mainly walk on natural ground and terrain so the sole is not really subjected to the abrasion of concrete on a daily basis. The leather and mesh upper is good. The interior lining and cushioning is worn through around the top or just below the collar and at the back of the heel on both shoes. I guess that would be where the Achilles tendon might be. On one the foam inner lining is gone completely in an area about the size of a quarter. Tongue is in good condition. Toe shield is releasing on the left shoe and on the right shoe it is just beginning to come loose. Where the upper attaches to the sole there is a 2 inch separation of the upper from the sole. It starts from the base of the big toe and goes around the inside of the left foot. This is beginning on the other shoe as well. If I were to continue wearing these for another couple of weeks the upper would separate from the sole and present a complete split and open air breech at these locations. I will say this though, they did indeed relieve some pain from plantar fasciitis. I don't know what the average longevity is for a shoe but I would think you should be able to get a year of daily use and I got about 60% of that. I'm pretty active on the farm here so I guess you could count that influence. So I gave this shoe 4 stars on account of the deterioration in the heel counter and the toe guard - upper/sole separations. It cost me an average of $0.66 per day to wear these shoes. You could probably get a year or more out of them if you weren't trekking the boonies everyday. I bought them solely based on the need for an orthopedic aid and pain relief from plantar fasciitis and I am quite happy with that aspect of it. Read more

The only shoe that really works for me.

Due to problems with my ankles that cause most shoes to wear quickly on the inside on one and the outside on the other, most sports shoes don’t hold up for very long and they start to affect my walk and balance, and can make my ankles a little sore. I end up throwing them away long before they wear out visibly. I wear orthotics from Good Feet and and I was advised by one of their sales reps to buy New Balance shoes that include their Roll Bar feature. I’ve been buying them now for years and consistently get the longest durability of any shoe I’ve tried, including New Balance shoes without the Roll Bar. And they fit my size 16 feet perfectly and are very comfortable. I’ve tried to cheap it out a few times with other brands, but they just don’t hold up under my weight with my poor ankles. I’ll keep buying New Balance shoes with the Roll Bar feature as long as they continue making them. Read more

The best version of 928s

Dale E. LandryJuly 28, 2019✓ Verified purchase

I wore 927s for years - they were the best shoe I have ever worn. The 928 version 1 was similar but just didn't fit the same, although they broke in to feel OK. Also, the leather uppers were the shiny type, and deteriorated too quickly. The 928 version 2 had better leather for the uppers, similar to the old 927s, but the shoe still didn't feel quite right. I was able to wear the 927s right out of the box with no break-in at all. It took me at least 6 months to break in the 928v2s. They felt too stiff and awkward and just didn't feel made right. The 928 version 3 still uses the good leather uppers, but something is different about the make of the shoe. I was able to wear them day after day out of the box, although they are not as comfortable yet as new 927s were. So, the version 3s are the best 928s, IMO. But not as good as the original 927s. Suggestion to New Balance: when you come out with the 929s, go back to the 927 model and just relabel them "new." The 927s were the best, although they did wear out a little faster. I dearly wish I had bought several pairs of the 927s before they were replaced. BTW, I replace my primary work shoe every two years, because the 927/8's soles wear down and become useless on ice and snow. But I still have my last pair of 927s. They are still very comfortable and look pretty good. Update - my review stands. This is the best version since the wonderful 927s. Regarding the shorter tongue - it is shorter by a little, but that doesn't cause me any issues. If anything I prefer it shorter. I am getting ready to order another pair, before the 928v3 is replaced by something worse. Unfortunately that is the world we live in - updates often ruin a good thing. Read more
