An Unconventional Use
Background story, keep with me here. I got divorced a few years back and that meant no more sleeping in our awesomely adjustable, memory foam, king size bed. Shame, but it’s what happens. Unfortunately, we didn’t have room in the house for another traditional bed, neither did I have the money to invest in a good bed. I was getting divorced and didn’t want to spend any more of his money than was necessary. I began looking into traditional Japanese butons, but found them to be too expensive to both purchase and import. Then I got an idea. Why not make one myself? This is where the mat comes in. Traditional Japanese beds sit on a tatami mat to wick away moisture and prevent direct contact with the cold floor. I looked online for mats and decided to go with this. It is the perfect size to fit under my home made bed and has been very critical to controlling the moisture content of my bed. The top of the mat is made of traditional Japanese rice grass and features a lovely image of Mt Fuji with some cherry blossoms spread about. The bottom is blue moisture resistant foam and makes the mat nonslip on the floor, as well as providing a small amount of comfort. I have been using this yoga mat under my bed for almost five years now and it’s still going strong. The mat has barely lost any of its color, as far as I can tell, and I’ve only had a mold issue once, which was quickly rectified and has not happened since. I’m not sure how good this mat is for yoga, but I can tell you it makes a great mat for a homemade Japanese inspired mattress. Read more
