I bought the ORICO Aluminum USB-C Hard Drive Enclosure specifically for my Samsung 870 EVO SSDs, and it’s been an absolute joy to use. The clever slide-button design means no screwdrivers, no hassle, just pop it open, slot in your SSD, and you’re ready to go. It’s the fastest, cleanest SSD swap I’ve ever experienced. The full aluminum body not only looks premium but keeps everything running cool, even during long editing sessions or large file transfers. My 870 EVO barely warms up, which is perfect for creators who need reliability during extended use. Plug-and-play, great speeds, and rock-solid build quality. Highly recommended if you want a no-fuss, high-performance enclosure that just works! Read more

Performs fantastically! Installed a spare Samsung 860 Evo SSD and the read/write speed is almost identical to if it was directly SATA3 attached! Very impressive for a USB enclosure. Just be sure you're using at least a USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 3 port to achieve full speed on this enclosure. Plugging it into a USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 Gen 1 or 3.2 Gen 1 port will bottleneck your performance. Great value for the price! I've got lots of old Samsung Evo SATA SSDs that will now be portable USB drives. Below are test performed on various ports on my two workstations (Dell Precisions) - Testing on a 3.2 Gen 2x2 port gives 568MB/sec read, 516MB/sec write. Testing on a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port gives the exact same performance. Testing on a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port gives 463MB/sec read, 453MB/sec write. Testing on a USB 3.0 port gives the same speed as a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port (since they're both 5Gbit/sec ports). Testing on a Thunderbolt 3 port gives 567MB/sec read, 524MB/sec write (runs at USB 3.1 Gen 2 speed, 10Gbit/sec). Testing on a USB 2.0 port gives 42MB/sec read, 43MB/sec write. Read more

I haven't tested the transfer speed, yet; so no comment about that. But it functions & I will keep it. On the most positive note, it has a tank of a metal shell; which would likely survive a truck running over it. But I would not use this as a portable enclosure. My negative notes; I do have complaints about the physical design. (1) The power button on the end sits tall waiting for an accidental push Off that might harm the drive. Those of you with space to move it away from activities on your table may not worry about that. But I have a densely cluttered workspace. I Solved the problem for myself by gluing a tall ring around the button that then requires something pen-sized to reach in & purposely push it. (2) The latch to open the enclosure has you push inward as you slide the latch release; but to slide the carrier out you must at the same time push the carrier from the opposite side with greater force for a couple of mm to move the latch point away from it's groove. Easy with 3 hands... I may later solve this by sanding down the plastic rim on the carrier that prevents it from moving toward the plugs end. (3a) Inserting a 3-1/2" drive feels awkward, there's little space at the back end & you push the drive toward the front as you drop the tail-end the last ~1/4". (3b) Which I discovered leaves a gap behind the tail-end just big enough that a minor bump to the enclosure from that direction can disengage the drive from the connector. That I Solved with a Small (1/2" wide) L-shape of very stiff foam to fill the gap behind and above (which allowed the drive to wiggle up\down with any jostling). There is no airflow obstruction from this small addition. Although I think there's little airflow to start with; just a little venting out of hot air rising above the top of the carrier. If I ever find a heat problem, I'll solve that by drilling a tiny hole (or a few) in the bottom of the enclosure to allow cooler air to enter. (4) A 2-1/2" drive in this enclosure would need appropriate spacers to hold it in place horizontally and vertically (or alternatively placed in a 3-1/2" adapter to better fit the enclosure.) Despite all that I'm keeping it, but I feel with all my problems it's way overpriced; unless you really need the stomp proof shell. Read more

Installing the drive is extremely easy, there is an audible click when the cover full slides over and locks into place inspiring confidence in the enclosure. The enclosure also feels extremely sturdy, thick, and like it could survive being hit by a bullet. For $20 it is honestly worth it just for the build quality alone. HOWEVER, no matter what cable I tried, even when trying a cable I know for a fact is capable of reaching 10gb/s transfer speeds because I have seen it with my own two eyes, the connectivity interface is not up to spec. I could not achieve more than 40mb/s a second no matter what I did. I do plan on keeping the enclosure for whenever I need to do quick and dirty file transfer's, but I would not default to using this as a method of transferring entire computer's worth of data while working in the field. I love how it feels in the hand, I honestly cannot get over it, I just wish the transfer speeds matched what was advertised. And I know it's not the SATA SSD causing the issue as I have 2 other enclosure's that the SSD can reach over 400mb/s a second transfer speeds on easily. Read more

I wanted this to work. Inserted a WD Black 5G disk, plugged in the Orico enclosure to the Orico power supply, and plugged the usb cable into my hub. Wiithing 15 minutes, the hub wouldn't power up until I removed the Orico usb connector. At that point, the power LED was out, and never came back on. The disk was quite warm. This disk had just been removed from my computer, and replaced by a much larger capacity HD. During the brief time that the Orico was working, all files on the WD 5 appeared. Regrettably, I found out subsequently that my 5TB WD Black was bricked. Disappointed -- I wanted this to work, but it appears to be Chinese junk. Orico is now on my “Do not buy” list Read more
