I bought my first rice cooker after moving out of my house where I lived with my friend from Vietnam. He had a rice cooker and I knew I needed one after that. I had nearly no money, so bought my this model of Oster for Black Friday 2012 for $10. It lasted me 6 years of use multiple times per week before it stopped turning on. I putzed with it for a bit and it seemed like something disconnected that needed to be Soldered back together. Since that's a skill I don't have and I was still short on cash, I looked online to see what a new one would cost knowing it couldn't be too much. $25 later in 2018, I had a new one in my kitchen. This past week in June 2024, I finally had the 2nd one break after constant use for another 6 years. It was a trooper that did its job perfectly and a one of these would probably last the average American a lifetime. For me, I will be moving on from this fabulous and simple model that has served me so well. I'm in a better place financially and will be buying one that will hopefully last me a lifetime. If you're planning to use this once a week, it will probably last you a few decades. It's a fabulous product that I have nothing but good things to say about. Read more
I bought this same rice cooker a few years back and lost it...maybe lent it out, can't remember. I used it all of the time. Tried a fully enclosed rice cooker but it took longer to cook the rice and harder to clean the lid. This isn't an actual US measure 6 cups cooked rice....it means 6 'rice cooker cups' which are 3/4 cup per US measure. So, you will actually get 3/4 cup x 6 equals 4.5 US cups of cooked rice, max. All rice cookers are measured this way. I put 1 rice cup measure of rinsed rice on the bottom, put the water to the 1 line. Add thick, sliced cabbage on top. After it starts steaming, then add the steamer tray with broccoli and carrot.. In about 20 minutes we have perfect side dishes for 2. True, it's not a lot of rice per person but I am pre-diabetic so I don't need more than 1/3 cup cooked rice for my own meal. Not only carbs are being watched but serving size as well. Add some protein and you have a nice meal. Any veggie combo works; I happen to love cooked cabbage. Remember to fluff your rice, it makes the portion look bigger...or you can put the rice in a measuring cup and invert onto the plate to create height. Also, my other trick is to serve the rice on top of the cooked cabbage, makes it look like more. For those who have spattering rice starch water....pre-rinse your rice first. Rinse until the water runs clear. Also, I put a kitchen towel lightly around the lid's rim to help catch any stray spatters, don't usually have spatters cooked my way with little rice and lots of veggies. When I did cook a pot full of rice, I did have a lot more spatters. As others have said, add some fat to your rice or pre-fry the rice...gives it a nutty taste. You can cook other things in this as well: heat up canned soup, or fill the pot with vegetables and a bit of water on the bottom to steam a potful. Also, the biggest PLUS for this rice cooker, vs others, is that it has a ring around the bottom (instead of 3 feet) which keeps it solid on the counter. The ones with 3 feet tip and can fall over. Best added feature from my previous Oster 3 cup rice cooker! ***May 9, 2016 - I have had it with this rice cooker. It's making the white rice hard and crusty on the bottom and mushy on top. I just ordered a Tiger cooker and hope it makes much nicer textured rice...I am switching to brown rice. Read more
I got it today and have already made a perfect pot of rice. I filled measuring cup with rice 2 times, put it in the inner pot and rinsed with water several times to get rid of most of that starchy white stuff that makes a mess, poured in enough fresh water to fill pot to number 2 along with a teaspoon of olive oil (very important) and salt to taste. Set the pot to cook and approximately 20-25 minutes later, rice is ready. No starchy mess on the lid or on the counter, very quiet while cooking and a subtle popping sound let's you know the rice is cooked and the warmer is triggered.. I've been using rice cookers all my life and the last one still worked but the inner pot started scaling which caused the rice to stick. So far this Oster rice cooker works perfectly hopefully it will last as long as the previous one. I didn't give 5 stars only because I still haven't used the steamer and it's too early to know if it'll last. For those of you wondering about the shade of red, it's the same shade as the Keurig Single Brewer. I plan to post an update. Update: After a month I am very happy with my rice cooker. I use it several times a week and never had any starchy mess spilling over. I've used the steamer alone to steam frozen roasted vegetable tamales and they turn out perfect. Cooking them in the microwave always made the edges crunchy or overcooked. You need 1 1/2 cups of water in the pot then place frozen tamale on steamer, put the lid on and then cook for about 25 - 30 minutes. Update #2: It has now been almost four years that I purchased the rice cooker and yesterday it started malfunctioning. It still cooks a pot of rice but won't trigger the warmer with a popping sound to let you know its ready and it gets so hot that the rice sticks to the bottom of the inner pot. This is the first and only issue after four years, I guess its time for a new one. Read more

I bought the rice Cooker a while ago, and it has held up incredibly well. It’s one of those appliances that just works every time without any fuss. The rice comes out fluffy and consistent, whether I’m making a small batch or filling it to the top. Cleaning is simple, the non-stick pot hasn’t worn down, and the cooker itself is compact enough to leave on the counter without taking up too much space. After using it for quite some time, I can honestly say it’s a dependable, affordable little machine that makes cooking effortless. Definitely worth it! I’d love to buy it again !! Read more
