New to the otamatone

I don't know if the one I received is defective but in all the videos I have seen, you need to squeeze the mouth for it to make noise. Mine makes noise when I touch the pad and it sort of just changes a little when I squeeze the mouth. Also, the pad doesn't pick up my finger movements right away, certainly not like in any of the tutorial videos I watched. If this is the best it works, it is pretty bad.
