I originally ordered this because it was on sale and I figured it might be good for a rainy day, it really didn't catch my interest but I grew up in the '60s and always loved going to the airport, so, what the heck?! Was I ever surprised! From the very start, the show kept me wanting to just watch a little bit more each time, until I found myself spending several hours glued to the TV set, not wanting to miss out on what was soon to come. I never would have dreamed it would be such a good show..never!! Set in 1963, the show actually makes you feel like you're there again.. pretty girls, timeless fashions, great acting, action, adventure, the characters almost seem to become like family and I felt as though I traveled the world alongside them as the show progressed. I was truly sad when it ended but I must say that the ending was very appropriate and just fit right in with the rest of the series...a real sleeper as far as good shows and good buys go, I recommend this highly to anyone interested in the theme and the times. If only we could go back in time...sigh..this is probably as close as I'll ever get! A very believable show. Read more
There is much I could say about this show but I’d be a decade late in doing so. For those who haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Pan Am is a nostalgic look at the dawn of the golden age of air travel beginning in the early 1960s. For those who enjoyed AMC’s Mad Men, I suspect you will also relish this rosy-tinted nostalgic look back into America’s past. The show introduced us to a very young Margot Robbie, who was supported in her endeavors by a superbly talented group of actors. The show does succinctly deal with the blatant misogyny, racism, class-strife, and political changes of those times. Perhaps not enough by today’s standards, but certainly enough to inject a modicum of reality into an otherwise fun television series. Really enjoyable and addicting television! 5 stars from me. Absolutely fun, insightful, and period-correct (for broadcast TV). It is a true shame that this show - specifically as cast - did not get the multiple seasons it deserved. If you are a fan of period pieces, and the early '60's in particular, don't miss this. Read more
"Pan Am" is a creative drama about air travel in the 1960s. The women are strivers, often coming from working class backgrounds. Through attention to style, setting priorities, and openness to new relationships they enter the world of the rich and powerful. The four lead stewardesses take different career paths but also maintain their friendships. More generally, the advent of modern air travel with the Boeing 747 meant that continental and international travel become widely available. While expensive compared to modern airline prices the experience was great and the airline staff were well paid (most would agree that stewardesses who meet high standards deserve excellent pay!). Pan Am was a cool one season show. The 1960s were more fully explored in the wildly successful show "Mad Men". People who travel and find the single life exciting will probably like this show. Good themes and social messages for people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. While the "Pan Am" era of the 1960s began with prosperity and ended in turmoil, during most of those years Americans never lost the belief that through hard work, intelligence, and good relationships you would almost always be able to rise up from entry level jobs to the middle class life and contribute to society. I just binge watched this show as I was recovering from recent surgery. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE. If you love MCM or Mad Men or Mrs. Maisel, this is for you. Some reviews pan the espionage subplots but I loved those. This was a real thing and made super credible. Christina Ricci's character was really annoying but you will love it too after the episode that explains what made her the person she was playing on the show. And honestly, so many shows could learn a lesson from how this show wrapped. I think this show tied up much more neatly and with far greater satisfaction in 14 episodes than Mad Men did after 15 seasons. Amazon made a huge mistake not picking this up when they had the chance. Mrs. Maisel is proof of how hungry viewers are for good shows based on this era. And I'll admit I had this idea while still on painkillers, but a few seasons forward this could be a perfect crossover, from Mrs. Maisel, to Pan Am, to relaunch the show. Midge will eventually be popular enough to go abroad, so why not????????? Watch this show. Heartfelt 5 stars, wish I could give more. Read more
