More Fun Than I Ever Dreamed of Having!

Carol the Bookwormβ€”October 7, 2015βœ“ Verified purchase

I have always loved Penn & Teller for their frank and honest assessment of social issues. Like Penn, I'm an atheist and I refuse to wear rose-colored glasses. His humor and Teller's priceless expressions and acting make for a delightful and thought-provoking experience. You may not agree with their views -- sometimes I don't -- but I can appreciate the thought processes that go into forming them. If you're a prude about swearing and the notorious "f" word - don't watch. This is liberally sprinkled with politically incorrect expressions. To me - that makes it worth watching! Read more

Great show

After a slight dip in quality in Season 4 due to topics no one really cared about, season 5 comes back with a vengeance and brings the series back to it's glory. The Immigration episode in particular takes an interesting look at one of the biggest issues in politics today, nearly a decade later. They show how building a wall on the Mexican border sounds like an effective idea, but in practice it's really not a solution to anything because a wall would just slow people down a little bit. Penn & Teller literally hire 3 teams of Mexicans to build 3 separate boarder fences. Then they race to see who can get past the fences fastest. One team has to go over the fence, one under the fence, and one through the fence. All 3 teams negotiate the fence obstacle quickly and without much resistance. So even if you're totally in favor of immigration reform in any way, this episode shows why a wall probably isn't the way to go about it. The Hybrid episode is another that's just fantastic television and should be watched by all. Read more

Good series

Cottonwood Budβ€”January 30, 2016βœ“ Verified purchase

Penn and Teller are good at whatever they do. These programs are all made interesting by the way they are put together and presented. Whether you agree with the fact that their subject is or isnt "Bulls***", Penn's presentation and reasoning are worth considering. Read more

Educational and disappointing revelations.

Raisuli the Magnificentβ€”March 5, 2015βœ“ Verified purchase

Wow, I had no idea that Mount Rushmoore had all that history. I am exceptionally ashamed of it now. Briefly; my ancestors came over to help establish this nation before the breakaway from England, and served under the direct command of commander in chief, General George Washington during the revolution. Knowing the mindset of the prejudiced mind who, on top of having a disposition to prejudgment, has a concept and vision of how things are supposed to be ordered, I am not surprised, though highly disappointed, that the Mount Rushmore monument has the history that it does. Yet it seems to be a selling point for what I would characterize as well meaning and good hearted, though plainly ignorant, Americans of what Rushmoore was supposed to symbolize. At the same time, I do kind of shrug at it. If this is still a locus of sacred Earth for the Native American people of the North American continent, then I think it may be high time to bring a referrendum to the American people to decide the fate of this sculpture. I will say this; that the Founding Fathers were men. They were no gods nor even demi-gods. They did not all get along with one another. They argued and fought over deep, profound and superficial differences in thoughts and in convictions that they were right. One of the things they all agreed on, however, was to dispose of any facsimile with Great Britain. This included barring the naming of ships, places and other things after people to as ensure that the deification of their personalities, or anyone to come in the future, would not take hold in this country. How disappointing that we have aircraft carriers named after presidents, and one founding member of congress, Doctor Benjamin Franklin. Were the founding fathers alive today, and if they were given cart blanche to do with as they pleased, I am quite certain that they would dispose of this monument, go through the entire list of naval vessels and have them renamed, command the US mint to redesign the currency, and perhaps have stricken names of all public works named after people, historical or living. They might then pass a law to reinforce that edict, perhaps issue a proclamation (authored by Jefferson) to denounce and reinforce their legislation, and to berate and educate the people of today to remind us of why we fought the Revolutionary War in the first place. I really don't have the time nor energy to feel highly outraged by this monument, but I do think it a poor thing to have in our national treasury of monuments, and, as I say, would prefer that the people of this nation vote on the matter of whether to keep it or not. Or, more preferably, put it to the senate. As always, highly educational, highly entertaining. Enjoy. Read more

despicable

I have to admit I only saw one full episode (the one on obesity) and the beginning of the episode on Wal-Mart. While I was watching the first episode I felt annoyed yet intrigued. I found the style way too heavy, rude for absolutely no reason and empty. At the same time I was attracted by the fact that these two guys were questioning "facts" that no one in society ever challenges. Then I got to the Wal-Mart episode, and that's where the shallowness emerged. The two presenters met with Robert Greenwald, producer of "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price". The documentary is based on over a year of research. Pen and Teller go on a crusade against the film. They quote the movie mentioning Wal-Mart wages around $10 then claim that the state minimum wage is at $5. So Wal-Mart pays well. However at no point do they specify what state they're talking about, which makes their argument absolutely void. The comics move on to criticize how the movie depicts Wal-Mart's lack of consideration for workers' shifts. They insinuate that even in Greenwald's company workers don't have any discretion or power over their schedule, otherwise they would want to go home asap. So it's supposedly the same thing everywhere regarding shifts. I happen to have interned at Greenwald's production company a few years ago. I can say that employees do have discretion over their schedules, so long as work is done, and guess what, people don't wanna just rush home, because they love what they do. Penn and Teller cut corners and they will waste your time. Read more

The show is okay if you like Penn

Jimβ€”November 19, 2015βœ“ Verified purchase

Penn is loud, abrasive, obnoxious, vulgar and egotistic. Almost every episode has a lot of unnecessary nudity. But if you can get past that, the show is mostly okay. It reveals everyday actions that are for the most part, BS. This applies to the few shows in the six seasons that I’ve watched so far. Read more
