This tool was purchased to assist in scraping some tarter build up on my dogs teeth. The product itself is very strong and durable. It is easy to use, but I highly recommend you do it carefully. It is very easy to use, but I was nervous to not slip and hit my dogs gum line. I was able to remove a lot of the build up, and recommend having a napkin or paper towel handy to wipe the tool clean. Slow and steady wins the race, and this tool is great in helping you win the battle. I also recommend staying on top of keeping the teeth clean. I bought this tooth scaler to clean the plaque off of my 2 year old german shepherds back teeth without having to take him to the vet. I have only ever brushed his teeth... So, I wasn't sure how it would work out.... I received the scaler very quickly, it seems to be well made. You do have to apply some pressure to get the plaque off, but for never having his teeth done, he didn't seem to mind having my hands in his mouth or having the tool so close to his face. I didn't see any damage to the tooth after using, so I know it wasn't cutting into the enamel. I haven't looked to see if this company has a combination kit, but I would have liked a pick with a curved scraper as well, but I had one from my old cleaning kit that I used for myself. I bought a new one from a brick and mortar store for around 4 bucks to replace mine, so it wasn't a big deal to me to replace. All in all, I was impressed and would definitely recommend this for pet owners. I don't know how well the size would work on a smaller animal, but it worked perfectly for my German Shepherd. I received an email from the company and liked the fact that they reached out to see how I liked the scaler and if they could do anything to improve. At first it's a bit scary to use honestly, you'll get worried about hurting your pet, I bought the product with some doughts. First day I used it I was being very careful trying to get used to the tool as well as allowing my Border Collies to get used to it. On the 2nd time using it both myself and my dogs were more comfortable. If you have noticed some build up or strong odor coming from your pets mouth I always recommend seeing your vet. I choose not to visit my vet cause I felt confident that I can address my dogs tartar build up, I strongly recommend using dog tooth paste and Arm and hammer gum sensitive tooth paste, to help loosen and soften up the tartar. This tool works perfectly, I gently get the tool underneath the gum line and with a ferm push down away from the gum line, making sure I am latched onto the tartar and it makes a uncomfortable sound but the chuck of tartar came right off. I stop after this and applied dog tooth paste to insure my dog isn't uncomfortable with me using the tool. It will take time and I recommend doing a tooth at a time. It pays off, I was honestly had my doughts that the tool would work. But once I successfully and pain freely removed a chunk of tartar off my 9 year old BC I felt instant relief. My does tooth is very healthy underneath the tartar, it's super white and I was worried my dog tooth was going to be rotten. But it was just the nasty smelling tartar build up. I'll strongly recommend buying this tool if you have the patience to work one tooth at a time. If you are in a rush to clean your pets mouth just take them to a Vet. I just received the tooth scaler. I had ordered it specifically for tartar buildup on my dogs teeth. In the past, because of this, a prior dog of mine got an infection and had to have a tooth removed, so I wanted to avoid future problems the second time around. I must say as someone who is fairly critical with high expectations of practical product manufacturing and engineering, and as a former engineering student, this product passed the test. It was super simple to use and had just enough bite to chip away 99% of the tartar buildup on all of my dog's teeth. (The 1% being the extremely small crevice in the back molar, with which the hook like pointed dental tool will most likely be necessary.) I was heavily impressed. This can save a boatload in veterinary dental costs and keep my pups gums and teeth healthy and happy m. Not to mention the instantaneous bad breath remedy from decay removal. The quality of the steel used seemed professional and great. I've only used it once thus far as I just received it but with regular upkeep I believe this is an irreplaceable tool for any pet owner. My only intrigue now is whether or not the steel will dull in the usage area over time. And whether or not the tool can be sharpened or has the potential of warranty or replacement if so. I've been pleased with how well this works for removing built up plaque from my dogs teeth, but the most recent time I used it, I discovered that there was a splinter of metal loose on the handle. The metal underneath was black and rusted. I immediately threw it out and, while I'd like to purchase another tool like this, I'm not impressed with the quality and will be getting another from a different seller. Read more
