Overall good writing pens

Kaycie BauerMarch 16, 2023✓ Verified purchase

I'm generally picky with pens, and usually have trouble with pens due to how quickly I write at times. So I buy a lot of pens to test to find those that can keep up. These pens, while slightly scratchy on my cheap notebook paper, do evenly put down the ink on my paper regardless of my speed. When I take a moment and pause (but not lift my pen), they do bleed through, but that is with just about every pen. The head and tail of lines can be a bit long, but are not drastically noticeable. Writing on thin paper is just fine with these pens, and they do much better with higher quality workbooks. They feel and act like a standard pen, but if you're writing shorthand a lot (or have dense handwriting), they really shine with clean lines. Holding the pen upright gets you smaller lines, which can make cursive writing look much more readable. The black ink itself is nice and dark, with an ever slight warm tint to it. It's nice and even in color. The blue ink is nice and bright, and stands out well even on a lined piece of paper. The red looks slightly orange-red to me, but it is also bright like the blue and stands out well. Crosshatching is OK, but the head and tail of your lines may not be perfectly even until you get practice in. I've noticed with some very quick crosshatching, the start of each line can be a little rough, but overall decent. Left handed seems OK, as the ink dries fairly quickly. I am a right handed writer, but you pretty much have to be right on top of the writing as it is written to smudge it. Water bleeding/smudging in general still has to be tested, and images will be uploaded in the future, but so far my notes have survived a coffee cup sitting on them. With how new my pens are, I can not review the longevity or their capacity. They look like they have a lot of ink, but we will see. Overall, good pens. I really like them, but they're not on my 'gotta have' or 'must bring' lists. If I see them in a pen cup, I'd be likely to grab them first. Read more

Replacing my G2s for everyday use

Andrew PitmanDecember 14, 2014✓ Verified purchase

Most of my everyday writing pens have been Pilot G2 retractible gel pens. As those have been drying up through normal use, I decided to pick up these V5s as a replacement. I've used a V5 capped pen, so I was familiar with the writing performance of this cartridge; but for my frequent-use pens I wanted a clicky. Many people have used this Pilot cartridge, and it needs little introduction. My understanding is that it uses a water-based ink. "Smooth" is the word that encapsulates its writing characteristics. The thin lines it lays down drip with professionalism. (One eccentricity to note is that the ink will bleed laterally on Oxford Stone paper, making the stroke lines blurry and fat. Perhaps this is because the paper is hydrophobic and doesn't absorb the ink before it can spill across the surface. So, not the best pens to use on water-resistant paper.) I've gotten very used to the handling feel of the bodies of the G2s which is one of the nicest body designs in a pen in my estimation. The V5 RT have the same, straight width through the whole body including the rubberized grip---very different than the feel of the voluptuous grip of the G2. I feel this gives a bit more of a slick dynamic to the body, but not noticeable besides in comparison to something like a G2. The final approach to the writng tip features the same heatsink-like ridges as on the capped V5, but my fingers never grip that far down to feel them. I don't prefer the design of the clicky button on the V5. The button is a bit narrow for my liking, and the slanted end of the body gives a weird, asymmetric feel as the button is plunged down. I'm inclined to face the pocket clip (where the body is slanted downward) inward towards my thumb when actuating to allow myself the most clearance on the button. Really, the button can be clicked in just fine in any rotational orientation of the body, but since the mating surface is not flat I tend to think about how it's facing. Speaking of the pocket clip, the one of the V5 is metal and springy. It attached by wrapping around the end of the body, not glued or pinned. A slight protrusion in the plastic body keeps the clip from rotating. This protrusion fills in the gap left by the split in the portion of the metal clip hugging the pen. So, the clip could be pulled straight off and pushed back on provided the metal doesn't warp out of shape in the process. I have not tested this. The end of the clip is folded back under to create a smooth tip. If whatever the pen is clipped onto is shorter than the clip (as in the case of the MOLLE webbing I hang my pens on in my bag) such that the clip is resting again against the pen body, the clip will hang up on the material when the pen is pulled out. A moderate force pinching/lifting up on the clip away from the pen body alleviates the hang up. One great thing about the clip design is that it's not likely to snap or break off like those on my G2s have done. So, is the elegant V5 a worthy replacement of my trusty G2? The lines produced by the silky smooth ink in the V5 cartridge are slightly thinner and perhaps more flat/matte than those laid by the gel ink in the venerable G2. The flush, straight body and ribbed tip (for her pleasure) of the V5 communicates a desire for sophistication and classy looks as contrasted to the function-oriented grip of the G2. The angled end mating with the slender clicky plunger hold loads of eccentric character. The pocket clip looks sensibly designed to last the life of the cartridge and beyond. And I fully plan to wear these pens to the last drop of velvety ink just as I have their aged cousins. The V5 RT is another trustworthy pen by Pilot and deserving of its place in your pocket or bag. Smooth, Precise, and My New Favorite Pens!

Jim RileyNovember 17, 2025✓ Verified purchase

The Pilot Precise V5 RT pens are hands-down some of the best writing pens I’ve ever used. The extra-fine 0.5 mm tip writes incredibly smoothly with no skipping, smudging, or blotting. Every line comes out clean and precise, which makes them perfect for journaling, note-taking, planners, and everyday writing. The retractable design is convenient, and the fact that they’re refillable makes them a great long-term value. The ink dries quickly, doesn’t smear, and the pens feel comfortable even during long writing sessions. If you love clean, sharp handwriting or just want a reliable pen that performs every time, these are absolutely worth it. Highly recommend! Read more
