Read more

I made only one shot to test this coffee maker before giving it to my wife as a gift. It tasted surprisingly good, given that I used normal pre-ground coffee (Trader Joe's medium roast, not intended for espresso) in the refillable pod. The Aeropress will still be my main brewing method, but it'll be good to have this device to satisfy my occasional espresso craving without needing to install an espresso machine on my already crowded kitchen counter. This well-built gadget is smaller than an Aeropress, so it can't make as much coffee at once, but it extracts a lot of flavor from the small amount of coffee grounds that fits in the refillable pod. It could potentially save you money if you're content with quality over quantity. One downside (compared to Aeropress) is that it has a lot of parts to clean. Another downside is that it's hard to load the refillable pod without spilling any grounds, and to remove the spent grounds afterwards. I wouldn't want to deal with the refillable pod when camping or traveling, but it would be okay with disposable pods. UPDATE: Gave it to my wife for Christmas, and she loves it! She's using finely ground coffee specifically intended for espresso, and the flavor extraction is excellent. Read more

This portable coffee maker has turned out to be a very practical companion for trips, especially when staying in hotels or spending time outdoors away from plug-in machines. It is small and light enough to slip into a bag without feeling bulky, so it fits easily alongside other travel gear and does not demand much space. Because it is powered by hand rather than electricity, it works in places where outlets are not available, as long as there is access to hot water. Being able to switch between ground coffee and NS-style capsules is useful: capsules keep things simple and tidy, while grounds make it possible to use preferred beans and dial in flavor more to personal taste. However I found using grounds to be pretty annoying because the grounds portafilter thing is so tiny and hard to clean out after making coffee. The basic brewing routine is simple to learn, involving filling the coffee chamber, adding hot water, and then pumping to push the water through, which makes it approachable even for someone who is new to manual espresso gadgets. In terms of flavor, I was able to get a surprisingly robust and satisfying cup that clearly beats most instant options or basic hotel-room coffee, particularly when fresh grounds are used. Capsules help keep the results more consistent from cup to cup because the dose and grind are handled in advance, which reduces variability and makes it easier to get a reliable result. There are a couple of negatives to point out: at times some coffee grounds end up in the drink, leaving a bit of sediment at the bottom of the cup, and as mentioned before, the container designed for pre-ground coffee feels undersized and fussy to deal with, especially when it comes time to clean it out. Even with those quirks, this remains a very capable and affordable and packable brewer that fits well into a travel or camping kit and makes it easier to enjoy a good coffee routine away from home. I've owned other portable espresso machines and this one takes the cake so far on how easy it is to use. The materials are mostly plastic, if that matters to you. However, the plastic is thick and durable. The critical components are made of stainless steel though and I haven't felt like anything was going to break under the pressure. I've tried both NS capsules and ground coffee (ground fine) and the NS capsules seem to do a little better. Cleanup is a bit messy with ground coffee. Great for a quick afternoon espresso in the office! NOTE - it doesn't come with anything to heat water up, so you'll need access to something that can heat up water! Read more

Took me a bit of time to actually stop being afraid to try this little travel espresso maker. There’s a lot of little pieces to this when you take it out of the box. Anyway, when I finally tried it, it worked great—I did it with a capsule and then with Bustello in the empty pod and both came out good. It’s a perfect travel item but would probably not use it at home—lots of parts. But I will take it on my many road trips. Read more
