This is an evaporative humidifier, meaning it draws water through a wick (the filter) and then disperses the evaporating water into the air via fan. It does not create a mist. This is my preference, because I think that mist can lead to accumulated moisture in places you don't want it. I also find that cool mist (while very soothing if you're breathing it in directly), may not disperse as well throughout my space. I need to have a cool mist humidifier right next to my pillow pouring moisture onto my face in order for it to counteract the gas heater. If you're looking for a cool or warm mist, this isn't for you. But if you're still with me on the pros of evaporation, please read on. The basic functionality is to disperse moisture through a smallish space (like a nursery or a large bedroom) through evaporation. It does that really effectively. The wicking filter is effecting at moving water, and the fan is effective at facilitating evaporation. I've had a hygrometer in the bedroom for the last three days, and the reading on the hygrometer has always been very close (within 1-2%) to the reading on the unit itself. I don't use the kid modes - I'm an adult and I ordered it to use for myself. But they're easy to engage if you're so inclined. The tank holds quite a lot of water, and the fan continues to run after the tank is empty in order to dry out the filter. I haven't let my filter dry out completely yet. But if you're going out of town or something and you're worried that the drying feature may not work, just turn the unit off and take the top off of the bottom to let the unit air dry. Even if dust falls onto the filter or into the bowl while you have the lid off, the filter can trap that material before it starts floating around in your air again (like a water vacuum cleaner). The fan is extremely quiet, even when your'e running it on a higher setting. On the lowest power, it's totally unnoticeable. Sleep mode is a feature that I like - it allows you to dim all lights on the unit completely. I don't want to have any blue or LED lights shining in the bedroom at night. The unit also has a timer. The main drawback is that the top and bottom of the unit don't really "connect" in any way. The bottom of the unit is the water bowl and the filter. The top of the unit is really just the fan and a case that covers it all. The top is just sitting on the bottom. If you want to move the unit, you need to pick the whole thing up from the bottom. That's not particularly convenient. But once you find a great spot for it, this shouldn't be an issue. It doesn't affect the functionality of the unit. It's a very simple device. It's a bowl of water with a wick and a fan. If you'd rather put a box fan in front of a bucket, be my guest. The basic concept is the same. But I actually think, despite any drawbacks, this little machine is really effective at doing the main thing it's supposed to do - adding moisture to your air. Compared to other evaporative units with a similar capacity, the price is in an appropriate range ($99.99 at the time of this writing). Read more

I got this for my toddler’s bedroom because the air gets dry, especially when the heat is running. I like that it is made with little ones in mind. The child lock and auto shut-off make me feel better about leaving it running at night. It also does not tip easily, which is important since my son is inquisitive and likes to explore everything. The age settings are a smart idea. I have been using the toddler mode, and the humidity shows right on the front, so I can see if the room needs more moisture. There is no visible mist at all. It just gently adds moisture to the air without leaving any residue on furniture, and that has helped with dry skin and stuffy noses. Cleaning does not take much effort, which I really appreciate. The tank has smooth sides, so I can get it wiped out quickly. The filter is made to last a while, too, which saves time and hassle. During bedtime, it is surprisingly quiet. Once the lights are off and sleep mode is on, there is no glowing screen and no bubbling or humming to distract him. He sleeps through the night with it running, and the room feels more comfortable in the morning. So far, it has been a useful part of our nighttime routine, and it makes me feel better knowing the air in his room isn’t so dry anymore. Read more
