Simple, Effective Replacement Filter That Keeps Opal Ice Tasting Clean and Fresh

The country charmDecember 15, 2025✓ Verified purchase

This GE Profile Opal replacement water filter does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and it does it well. If you own an Opal nugget ice maker, this is one of those maintenance items that’s easy to overlook, but it makes a noticeable difference in ice quality when you stay on top of it. Installation couldn’t be easier. The filter is clearly designed for the Opal, slides right into place, and locks in without any forcing or confusion. It’s a true drop-in replacement, which is appreciated when you’re just trying to do routine upkeep and not troubleshoot fitment issues. Performance is where it really matters, and this filter delivers. The ice tastes clean and fresh, with no odd flavors or odors, even if your tap water isn’t perfect. Nugget ice absorbs flavors easily, so having a good filter in place is important, and this one does a solid job of improving overall water quality. You can tell the difference, especially if you’ve gone too long between filter changes before. Replacing it every three months feels about right. By that point, you can usually tell the filter has done its job, and swapping it out keeps the machine running at its best. Regular changes also help protect the ice maker itself by reducing mineral buildup, which can extend the life of a pretty expensive appliance. Build quality feels good for what it is. It doesn’t feel flimsy or cheaply made, and it seals properly without leaks. It’s clearly designed specifically for this machine rather than being a generic filter repurposed to fit. While it’s not the cheapest filter out there, it’s worth it for peace of mind and consistent ice quality. This isn’t an area where cutting corners makes much sense, especially when you’re using the ice daily for drinks, entertaining, or just because nugget ice is hard to give up once you’re used to it. Overall, this is a reliable, easy-to-install replacement filter that keeps the Opal ice maker performing the way it should. Clean-tasting ice, simple maintenance, and proper fit make this an easy five-star product for anyone who owns a GE Profile Opal. Read more

Problems with Scale Inhibitor Filter

SFJune 30, 2025✓ Verified purchase

We own two GE Opal 2.0 ice makers using very different sources of water. One is high desert municipality and the other is New England well. We filter both. The well water is conditioned by a whole house softener. Neither location has hard water (after conditioning). However, we decided to use the standard (white) charcoal filters for additional filtration. Mainly for peace of mind inside the reservoir, as the water is recycled a bit. The results were fine. No additional problems and no increased noise. Opal ice makers units are intrinsically problematic, poorly designed, and fundamentally difficult to fully clean/descale. They produce lots of noises, but loudest and more frequently around “cleaning time”. I was going to purchase another charcoal filter (white) and saw another filter option for purchase… The scale inhibitor version (blue). I decided to use it instead on one of the machines. I removed the three month old charcoal filter (white), soaked/descaled for 24 hours, rinsed fully, shocked the entire system with a bleach solution, rinsed fully, installed the new scale inhibitor filter (blue), refilled the machine with water, and started use. The results are/were surprising and very disappointing! Within two days the machine started producing the loudest agonizing noises within minutes of turning on the ice making cycle. The bottom line, the scale inhibiting filter (blue) restricts water from getting to the upper internal water reservoir, in turn preventing water from flowing into the rotary ice making mechanism!!! This filter is a complete failure… and in our case would probably destroy the machine!!! Once the scale inhibiting (blue) filter was removed, the machine operated normally and without any noise!!! I will likely start using the standard charcoal filters (white) again. Read more

Undetermined effectiveness

I want to believe this is doing what it needs to be doing to clean the water and keep the machine from building up with hard water deposits, but not yet sure. It definitely reduces water flow but it doesn’t seem to impact ice production directly. I already use filtered water for the machine so this was an additional protection barrier. Read more
