Rab Mens Valiance Down Jacket - Waterproof Windproof Warm Down Coat for Climbing Mountaineering

I really like this jacket for everything that it is. Warm! Waterproof! And not too puffy! Fit was just right, and I don’t think you’d need many if any layers underneath beyond a T shirt and be comfortable 0 and above. Waterproof fabric is great in such a warm jacket so you don’t need a layering system which is what I wanted. My only issue with the jacket was the hood, some of the other RAB jackets had a hood role for when not in use, this jacket does not. Also the material inside the hood was very noisy against my ears, making it very hard to hear when walking. I know it’s a hood and will block some sound but it was just noticeably louder than other jackets I tried with hoods. But it is waterproof so it will save you in the wet, and you don’t need an outer shell. It’s a really great jacket and solves all layering issues in one well designed and well fitting jacket. My only design change would be removable hood or rollable hood storage of some sort, I think that would add to the versatility of the coat to be worn for more general uses other than extremes which this jacket can obviously handle. I own Rab’s microlite Alpine jacket and was looking for another down jacket that is waterproof. After some research, it appeared that this jacket is one of the few that is both down and waterproof. Most of the reviews confirmed it’s good performance and that all design as usual. It seems the two negative issues associated were that it doesn’t breathe as well as lighter non waterproof jackets (as expected) and is slightly less packable than standard light down jackets. These two items aside, my testing in the Pacific Northwest has not left me wanting for more. I believe this is the newer version and does not come with a stuff sack. I have found that this new version easily packs into a 5L stuff sack. As another reviewer mentioned, the new version apparently is rated at 700 versus the older version’s 800 down. I wasn't all that familiar with Rab products but after doing a little research i decide to buy this one. It is down filled, waerproof and windproof, all of which I've tested outside. I live in Wisconsin so it's a great place to test warmth in the winter. I've worn it at 0 degrees with just a light shirt on under it and was still very comfortable. I'm sure it will keep me warm well below zero with a bit of layering under it. All I can really say is that I'd buy it again and am now looking at other Rab products to purchase. You'll love it.
