This was without a doubt one of the best purchasing decisions I've made. I had a 4T external hard drive that I had for less than a year that simply stopped connecting to my computer. I took care of that external drive so much that it had it's own hard case (worth about $40!) and only used it 4x times before it failed. Without the insurance, not only would I have been out of $200 for the external drive, but I would have lost over 10 years of data. (Yes, I keep data for too long!). Instead, I called RESCUE and was instructed to register my insurance, which I did easily. Basically, if you are just buying this insurance right now, I'd recommend that you register it day one so you don't forget. All you have to do is email them asking to register. They will ask you to provide some simple information, including a screencap of your receipt here on Amazon. And that's it. Once you're registered, you can contact them with any issue you have. I contacted them to tell them that my drive had failed. They asked me a few simple questions that I expected to be "hostile" or "intrusive" but were not. Very straightforward, non-judgemental. They simply wanted to know what happened, so I told them. Immediately, they told me they would send me a pre-paid box and envelope to return the drive so they could recover the data. After a few weeks, I received a personal call to update me on the progress. Then I received a brand new external hard drive FREE (identical to the one that stopped working), and about two weeks after that, I received a small external with the data on it. All my data was recovered. I was beyond happy and so grateful! So, if you are buying an external, make sure you add this. It's only $9.99 and can end up being worth hundreds to you! As a caveat, I have read some of the low ratings and I'm trying to understand the discrepancy in experience, and I want to make it clear, that my external drive wasn't broken. It would turn on, but simply wouldn't connect to my computer. So, perhaps that helped in them recovering my data. I can't guarantee that if yours is broken you will have the same experience as I did. So, I would recommend you buy a hard case for it. The one I bought is on Amazon, #B01JWAYVY4. It's called "BOVKE Protective Case for Seagate Expansion" and its one of the sturdiest most well made cases I've had for such an affordable price. Read more

Basic truth: hard drives fail, especially portable ones, because - well - they're portable. I scrupulously buy one on every drive I purchase, even though I compulsively make multiple drive copies of my most critical drives, and pay $10.month to back up those directories to Crashpad Pro. I am very careful with my drives, and yet, occasionally, one will fail. Over the years, this service has done a quite good job of rescuing my data. I hate the USB 3.0 connector - it begs to fail - and so, I think in a few cases, it was a failure of the connector or interface. On one occasion, I got back a recovery with structural chaos, but I could find most of the files. No matter where you buy your drive, you can purchase this warranty. You just need to photograph the serial number plate on the drive, and the receipt to show when you purchased it, and email to the service. Read more

Holy moly. So, I had not one but TWO hard drives fail within the same week. Talk about brutal. I not only lost my main working hard drive, but my back-up. I luckily remembered I had purchased this recovery plan off-hand. Their customer service was super easy — called, talked to someone quickly, sent it in. It came back in about 3 weeks. They sent me the repaired hard drive and a replacement — WITH ALL OF MY WORK. I had about 2.5 TBs of missing data (I'm a photographer) and it was all there. I literally cried. I wasn't sure if they'd be able to pull through, but I'm so glad they did. Highly recommend — it's too cheap to pass up. Recovery like this costs a ton of money out of pocket! Read more

I bought a WD 8 T external HD from Amazon less than 6 months ago and it failed in the first week of December. Fortunately, I had bought the Seagate Rescue Data plan and contacted them about rescuing my data. The first person I spoke to was unintelligible. He sure wasn't from around here. I asked him to give me someone that spoke English and the second person--a lady was more understandable and gave me instructions for shipping the device to them. It took about three and a half weeks to get my data back. From some of the reviews on here I was really nervous about not getting my data restored but all was fully restored and I am pleased. On the down side I sent them a failed 8 T HD and they sent me back a 4 T HD. I am a little disappointed about that and will get with them or Amazon about that. Read more

hello, upon purchasing a new hard drive, for us, it is always handy to have a back up just in case. if something is going to go wrong, it will in the first couple of years. so far, we have never had to use these data recovery plans and that is excellent. but, our files are just as important as anything else and these plans make recovery justifiable. the hard drives get better and better each year. for us, this new 3tb hard drive should take almost two years to fill up at the rate our files grow every year. thank you rescue for back up we never want to use, but is lurking around for a couple of years....
