My dryer decided to stop heating so after I did some research and figured there’s no way my handyman could simply test a few components without taking the whole dryer apart, I looked on Amazon and found this handy retractable clothesline and a couple of other drying items and set up a Dr. Seuss laundry layout (my kid’s description) in my back room until I can get a new dryer. This line works well. The line is a lot longer than my room and the instructions tell you how to make the line strong and taunt. I was even able to hang towels on it. The item is as described and works as stated. It is small enough that it basically disapears when not in use. The negative I see is in the hardware provided. Do yourself a favor and use decent hardware. The screw heads twist off or strip out easily. The anchors are not suitable for outdoor use. The Shepards hook works, but is a pain. Drill a pilot hole first if installing in wood and save your hands. On a very positive note, the unit does a pretty flat 180 degree so you can easily have it connect to one location when the weather is good and another location when there may be rain. I have a solar shed that is 65 feet long. My unit is mounted on the front of the shed and runs to a fence for good weather. It runs from one side of the solar shed to the other for bad weather as that is dry in the rain. For the price, I am happy with the unit even having to supply decent hardware. Read more
Nice and long-the string did get stretched out after one summer of use-- we left it out in 2 harsh New England Weathers so eventually the plastic casing cracked at the base where it is screwed into the plate that mounts to the wall. Great line! You have to wrap it twice on the spool or it will not hold. With the single wrap the line dropped right away. Double wrap fixes the problem. Read more
*Update- While I still don't think this is a quality clothesline for my needs, I give 5 stars to the company. After leaving this review, they reached out (about 3 days later) and offered a refund. I do recommend this company and will look to see what other options they may have for a stronger clothesline. Unfortunately, this product is plastic and doesn’t hold up for long. There is a plastic piece underneath the clothesline where the cord is to be wrapped around in order to hold it in place. After about three months of use, this piece snapped off while I was hanging towels. I will be looking for something made of metal and more durable. Read more
We bought this after saying goodbye to our worn out rotary clothesline. The idea of a retractable line makes a lot of sense and seemed to be just what I was looking for. Installation very simple. The reel mounts to an available flat surface with a couple screws and the hook for the line on another surface. Simple, easy and quick. I installed the hook on my shed only 20 feet or so away and a second hook in another, more distant location. When you go to use it you connect the line to your hook, and then you need to loop the line around the built-in post on the bottom of the reel to keep it from releasing more line when you hang something. The problem I’ve seen is this: if you only loop the line around the bottom of the post once, it won’t hold and the line will sag. So you need to loop a second time around the post. This works fine keeping the reel from dispensing line - and it minimizes sag. When you are done and want to reel the line back up, however, the twice-looped line is caught and doesn’t want to release easily. You have to pull hard to get the line loose and I can see where the line is getting damaged from being so tightly squeezed together. I anticipate the white outer layer of the line is going to rip in a short time, and THAT will cause a major issue. Holding at 3 stars for that reason. This retractable clothesline is exactly what I needed! It’s heavy duty and easy to install, and the 45-foot length gives plenty of space to hang multiple towels and clothes. We use it mostly by the pool, and it’s perfect for drying wet pool towels quickly. The line retracts smoothly when not in use, so it doesn’t take up extra space.
