This 50/50 wool/acrylic is a thickly knitted exterior, w/a velvety smooth, black fleeced-material lining that boosts the hat's ability to block cold & wind. It also adds comfort, & is slippery enough to not mess up one's hair, or at least not a lot. It feels really good on my head & especially my ears. It can be cuffed too for wearing in not so cold winter weather. It is made from a thick knit which stretches quite large, but also returns to it's smaller size to fit various head sizes, at least after several wearing's. Long term, it might adjust to a regular wearers' head size. Adults & teens will benefit most from the sizing, likely too large for most children. The hat comes in 5 colors, w/a unisex style suited for men & women. I ordered the wine color which is a great dark wine color that is truly suitable for men & women. A nice change from men's typical black/brown/army green stocking cap colors many men wear! Hand-washing in cool water is advised, but I have great luck in cold/cool water in a front-loading washer on gentle setting. I then let my wool-blends hang dry a bit, then fluff & finish drying in lowest warm setting for a few minutes. I wash all my "hand-wash" items this way, & have had no catastrophes yet. The price is a good value for the quality & usefulness of this hat. My husband says he'll use it for snow plowing/shoveling when MN snow days kick in! If you're looking for a nice-looking winter-warm ear-covering lined-cap beanie look no further. The outer fabric is smooth, stretchy, and reasonably thick when you count the lined cap (not ear band tho.) The half wool half acrylic fabric almost has a smooth sheen across the ribbed design. There's no pom so it can be easily worn under a hooded coat or jacket. For myself, a M-L hat size woman, there's room for a bun atop my head (straight mid-back length hair) with the folded band moved down a tad. Very versatile. The cap is also lined in a smooth velour-type 'fleece' so it's not about to catch on any hair. It appears great quality with no loose threads or snaggy spots. In the cap there is one seam going from the bottom of the velour 'fleece' to the top of the cap. There is a small tag towards the bottom that's not irritating and easily removable with tiny scissors. The excess tag will be hidden in the seam as the velour seam protrudes a couple millimeters on either side of the tag. It's truly a perfect hat. I tried this on indoors and it was so comfortable I forgot to take it off until I got too warm. It's hard to go wrong with a hat like this; I would choose this over pretty much any winter hat due to the value, comfort, and subtle elegance of the fabric on the outside and inside. I was a bit concerned when I got this hat as it arrived shrink wrapped and appearing very thin indeed. It is very tightly knit of 50% wool and 50% acrylic, that requires hand washing. It fluffed up a bit once out of its packaging and it appears to be of substantial weight and thickness to keep out the cold. I really like the fleece lining on the inside for extra warmth but would have appreciated it if it provide enough coverage for the ears too. There is a noticeable seam when you wear in single layer which can be turned to the back. The hat, at least in new condition, does not "drape" when warn in this way and the extra depth makes one look like a cartoon character. This does not bother me in the least as I intent to wear it with the brim folded over and looks classy. I live in upstate NY where it gets pretty darned cold in the winter. This is going to be my go-to hat for snow shoveling, taking walks and short outings. It would probably also do very well for prolonged use for outdoor winter sports. This is a quality hat you won't be ashamed to be seen in, even in dressier situations. You should have a long time if you take care of it. Read more
