I purchased the G-RAID Shuttle along with my Mac Studio because it was supposed to be designed to use with a Mac. While it may be true that it will work with 'some' Macs, it doesn't work with the Mac Studio computers. This is a drag because the Mac Studio is designed for people like me who do a lot of video editing. I am advanced Mac user who has been using Macs pretty much every day since 1992, and I have never had as much of a problem with a piece of hardware as I did with the G-RAID. After five hours of struggling to get it to work, including a call to Western Digital support, I ended up just packing it up and returning it. A further online search has revealed that many people simply cannot get this to work with Mac Studio and some Macbook Pro computers no matter what they do. I am stunned by the poor implementation of this RAID system by Western Digital. It has soured me on their products as a whole now because it tells me that they are content to release a $2,000 RAID system that is incompatible with the very computers it was designed to work with. This needs some further software / firmware development before it is really ready. And the fans are really loud and run constantly. If you are a Mac user who has a machine with the M1 chipset, do yourself a favor and avoid this drive. Read more

Update: After ordering two more of these from Western Digital and having the same problem, I finally got to speak with a tech support person who knew what he was talking about. It turns out that drive has to be connected to the computer for it to power up (never seen that before); and I had a bad cable. So I'm changing my rating to 4 stars. I would have given it five stars except for these issues: 1: Nothing in the quick start guide or the manual states that the drive won't power up if it's not connected to the computer. 2. The previous tech support persons I spoke with never mentioned that either, and just told me to return the drives to Amazon. 3. If I had known that the drive had to be connected to the computer, I could have figured out on my own that my cable was bad. Original review: I've bought four of these Shuttle 4 drives from Amazon, and ALL of them have been DOA! I plug them in, press the power button, and NOTHING HAPPENS! No LED, no fan movement, no sounds, nothing! The first two I bought were 48TB drives. SanDisk tech support said send them back to Amazon so I did. Then I ordered two more, this time the 72TB size. Same exact problem - DOA! And same useless advice from tech support. They just keep telling me to send them back to Amazon. Read more
I like the concept of the Shuttle but the fan was on even when I wasn’t retrieving or importing files. Made no sense to have the fan running, it drove me crazy. Read more
Everything negative other people have written regarding this RAID’s compatibility with Mac is true. They don’t shake hands very well. And it isn’t even despised by WD’s customer service. They fully admit that they have problems with Mac and offer your money back. Of course the email with the paperwork including the label for return they promised never came - but that’s typical in today’s world. The long and the short of it is this … There are some pretty major glitches with the Shittle 4 that absolutely should be addressed but are not. The fact that the fan doesn’t turn off when you’ve shut down the computer. You need to physically unplug the G-RAID or the fan will just keep blowing until it burns out. The Mac hangs up when doing simple tasks with the hard drive. It’s a mess. I spoke with tech support. They know about the issue. It has been a problem for years and they have now desire or plans to address it. Don’t waste your time or money. Read more
I don't understand why the power button is put in the most inconvenient place...On The Back. Who designs these things? For this reason alone I wouldn't buy one. Read more
