It has clear reception and great speaker quality. It is good for poor eyesight to feel the raised buttons for choosing Am or FM or oxy and then choices on each. It also has an information button for the time and station number etc. poor vision or blind can feel and memorize the location of the raised buttons for choosing options. Now my blind husband can find the mid Iowa high school ballgames on F M and the local news on A M stations for towns and cities. Some times he listens to stations almost a hundred miles away and also on some evenings he can find stations in far states. The volume control is a knob on the right side of the radio away from all buttons and it turns right or left. The Webster city radio station is 35 miles away north. It comes in strong like being in the room with us. It is both am and fm stations. KXEL in Waterloo is 80 miles east and it is a favorite but is a little staticky. Des Moines is south of 50 miles away and am is some days clear but not always, but very good on fm. He enjoys finding far away stations and listens to their local news and loves their sports play by play even if poor quality. Read more

Very durable, sturdy, good Radio, for a totally blind user, like myself, I enjoy it. The antenna is very long and thick, and it speaks in six different language languages very loud and you can turn the voice over high or low. It speaks everything. Read more

Straight to the point: My wife has been legally blind for years and now her eyesight is about totally gone. Over the years we have gotten several items that were supposed to be for the VIPs (visually impaired person). A lot of the things we received, even a sighted person couldn't use, much less a VIP. I assume these items were engineered by sighted person who really didn't know what a VIP needed or could use. When I came across this radio I was very skeptical. I read the review that came with it from the individual that was a VIP and I was impressed by what he wrote, to where I ordered the radio. And lo and behold to my surprise it must have been engineered by a VIP or someone who has a VIP in their family or a close friend that is a VIP. I gave it a Five Star Plus. It's well made, very sturdy, and for reception it's better than any of the radios we now own. It's very easy to learn and to operate for a VIP. It's engineered to last a long long time. Most portable radios have antennas that are made from low grade material and break or bend in short order. A VIP can put extra strain on items they handle because of their loss of vision. The antenna on this radio is made out of a high quality heavy metal material that under normal use, a VIP or anyone would have trouble bending or breaking it. As for the sound it beats the radios we now own. Overall I can't believe just how great this radio is. As for any cons right now I do not know of any. I'm not the one that's visually impaired so I will add this, my VIP wife loves it. And after a few tries and some coaching she can operate it very easily. We both highly recommend it to any VIP. Considering it does what it's supposed to, it's well worth the price. Read more

I appreciated the sound quality for FM as well as the voice prompts. The Quality of the AM could have had a bit more treble and less base. Would also be better if there were more voice prompt station resets rather than five for AM and five for FM. Still voice prompts were what drew me to this radio. Read more

I actually purchased this radio to give to my daughter. She is a Special Ed teacher of the visually impaired working in GA. I thought it would be a good teaching aid and introduce her students to its availability. I have other Sangean radios and knew the quality would be there. I decided to run it through the ringer before I gave it to her problem free. I found the radio met all my expectations and performed very well. The voice prompts were clear and easy to understand with the exception of "seek up" which took me a while to realize what she was saying. The sound is very good and volume more than adequate. Overall I was very satisfied with the radio. I'll update my post if necessary after my daughter has had a chance to use it. Read more

SANGEAN means high quality. It's sort of like Sony was when I was a little boy. I was curious as to the handicap features so I bought it. Every time you turn it on a voice will come on and tell you. When you change the channel it will tell you what channel you changed it to and also the bandwidth. Every thing you do there is a voice that announces it. Which is good for handicapped people but it takes a few seconds before it actually goes to its function. It wastes time for me. Sometimes I'm in a rush to listen to the radio but I have to wait till it finishes it's announcements. So if you're not handicapped think twice and go for the big one. Otherwise it's a very good radio with very good sound and sound control. Read more

I'm using this as a table radio so I haven't put batteries in it. I also haven't done anything with the sleep timer or the alarm. The features I am using are very good. the voice is clear and speaks everything even connecting headphones or plugging something into the aux jack. it has a clock which also talks. it takes its time responding when I turn it on and speaks what band I'm on and what frequency before I can hear the actual station. that's a minor thing though and I really appreciate always knowing where I am on the dial. I do wish it had a weather band but overall I'm very satisfied with it. it's very simple to set up and use. I didn't need any sighted help. I got a pdf of the manual from Sangean. any Read more
