If you wish to embark upon a journey of pure Christmas magic, please DON'T believe a word of the few negative reviews of this movie posted here. Instead, BELIEVE in the plethora of glowingly positive reviews here, and rush to order this DVD (preferably the wide-screen version if you can find it)! This movie is a sheer joy and a true classic for the whole family! I discovered this film as a 36-year-old, when my beloved mom and I watched it on TV together a few years after it came out. We both adored it from the start! Everyone in the family will delight in the first 45 minutes of the film, which re-tell the legend of St. Nicholas and how Santa Claus came to be. David Huddleston and Judy Cornwell, the actors who play Santa and Mrs. Claus, respectively, are the total embodiment of the warm, wonderful Santa and Mrs. Claus of my heart and imagination! The depictions of the far-away, wintry North Pole--the elves with their various personalities, the amazing toy factory, the magical flying reindeer, and everything else--are the stuff of my eternal-inner-child dreams! The film then moves from the times of legend to the present. Two subplots that eventually intertwine constitute the rest of the film: a rather touching story involving a starving, homeless boy and the well-to-do little girl who helps and befriends him, and the other subplot, involving a renegade elf (played by Dudley Moore) and a comically villainous toy mogul (played by John Lithgow), who wants to exploit him. While all is told in a way that youngsters will find truly entertaining, older children and adults will also find meaningful (but not preachy) observations on everything from the crass commercialism that has seemingly overwhelmed Christmas (at least in the U.S.A.), to the decline of workmanship and quality, to the true meaning of charity, compassion, and kindness--and yes, even forgiveness. In short, it's a winner, and I predict you and yours will enjoy this movie together as a family tradition-of-the-season for years and years to come! Read more

You know, my wife had never seen this movie before tonight. On Christmas eve, I told my wife that I wanted to watch a Christmas movie, and popped this in. She got it for me a year ago, and watching it, brought tears and feelings of Nostalgia. The movie itself is excellent and my wife was pretty sure she recognized patch as dudley moore right away, but wanted to watch the whole thing before confirming, which the credits did. Without spoilers, its definitely worth the purchase to add this movie to your collection. It has the dad from Third rock, and dudley moore, and tells a story that'll have you laughing and crying. The visuals, though dated by today's standards, are beautiful. I highly recommend this movie to be added to your collection, no matter what format. Read more
