This 1TB drive worked immediately upon connecting it to my 2012 macbook's usb port. I'm using it to transfer several very large apple photo libraries to my new Macbook pro. The disk has to be connected to the Thunderbolt 3 port on the new MacBook through an additional expensive cable since the new MacBook only has TB3 ports, but the transfer of photos is working. I've been using the Seagate backup hard drives for years along with the backup software that comes with them. That goes back to Windows 7. And, I'd rather not store my "stuff" in the cloud. When I get a new computer, I get a new Seagate backup. It's a no hassle setup with the software and the hard drive. Once I've got the backup settings the way I want them, which takes only a couple of minutes, it does the backup automatically everyday without any further messing around with it. Best of all, it saved all of my files from my old computer when it "died" a month or so ago. In fact I still have an old Seagate backup hard drive from a Windows 7 computer that still works... although I've long ago retired it. Read more
This is an adequately good External HDD; it's very similar to many other External HDD's and at the time I purchased it, it was the lowest priced. This will not always be the case: for example, in January I purchased several similar 1TB External HDD's for $35 each, when this one was $45. The price of External HDD's is very volatile right now. I'd recommend looking around to see if you can find anything similar (and from a reputable brand) at a lower price. If not, then this one is great! It's got a nice finish and the material is good quality. Depending on how you're using it. This thing only runs at 5400rpm as opposed to 7200rpm, and if you're using this as your main storage drive to supplement a small SSD with an OS (like I am running on several computers), the slower speed is definitely noticeable. If instead you're pulling this thing out once every month to update your data backups, you won't have any problems at all with it. It's good quality and a good value depending on the time of purchase and what you need it for. Read more

The external hard drive is honestly much better when paired with one of those USB port splitters for more access and availability. Now these external HDD usually come with their own back up programs and such, But that's not what I use them more. I reformat the entire thing for my own personal use, and my computer recognizes it as if there was just an additional hard drive floating around waiting to be used. Important note: if you do what I did and reformat it to be recognized as just another hard drive, the computer will sometimes be constantly connecting to it, so trying to safely remove it may not be an option. In that case, the safest method would be to completely power off the computer, and then unplug it. Read more
