This is a review for the Seagate 6TB desktop hard drive. The portable models I've had before (4TB) have been virtually silent, but this one is not. Immediately upon plugging it in for the first time, it starting making a fan-like whirring noise that has been constant. You'll notice it if you're in a very quiet location, but some moderate ambient noise in your environment would be enough to mask it. The noise is enough for me that it's not going to be acceptable leaving it connected constantly, but that's OK, I can demote it to an emergency backup drive. Noise aside, performance has been great so far. This is my fourth Seagate drive (previous ones have been the portable ones). My oldest one is about six years old. They've all held up well so far. I format them into 2TB partitions for Linux and it works great. Read more

I purchased this HDD as a backup and after about 9 months it just stopped working...I have purchased many cables and power options to try and get it up and running again to no avail. I contacted Seagate they told me there was nothing they could do. I would not buy another one of these and definitely not from Seagate what's the point if it dies and you lose all of your important data? Read more
