I purchased this product primarily to maintain a fine edge on tactical knives used for everyday carry projects and field use while camping/hiking. Additionally, there’s always the odd variety of household cutting tools that need periodic sharpening. Here’s a brief summary of my experience. The whetstone arrived on my doorstep on time and in good condition. Upon opening the package I immediately noted that the whetstone was the product of a high-end quality control manufacturing process. Shortly after my receipt of the whetstone I received an email from the manufacturer that inquired after my satisfaction and offered assistance if and when needed. Functionality is exceptional. The heavier grit side of the stone sculpts the metal edge while the finer grit side hones the tool to as fine an edge as you would want. As a kid I learned a thing or two about knives. For example, for safety’s sake, when carrying a knife while walking; carry it by the blade and if you stumble/fall you’re well disposed to stretch your arms forward. Beats carrying a knife by the handle and falling on an open blade! What comes to mind next is - a sharp knife is safer to work with than a dull knife. And also, to test if your knife is REALLY sharp, cut a piece of paper at the paper’s edge. A sharp knife will slide through the paper like a razor. Well, for safety while sharpening a blade, the product comes with a rubberized slip resistant holder to keep it firmly in place when in use. In bringing what has turned-out to be a rather long winded review to a close, I want to share that the sharpening functionality of this whetstone is exceptional. In short, for a fair price, you get an exceptional product. I sincerely hope this review helps. Read more

This whetstone did a great job sharpening my knives. It was a bit tricky to use at first since I’m a beginner, but once I got the technique down it worked really well. Feels high quality and I’m happy with the results. Read more

I was never good at sharpening knives and so spent years neglecting my knives, which have long been first rate tomato-smashers. I finally got tired of all the extra effort in the kitchen and ordered this, along with the 1000/6000 so that I could use its guide. Started with the guide because of my lack of confidence, but honestly, after using it to sharpen one carving knife (took a while because of the knife's atrocious condition), I was familiar enough with the angle to free-hand the rest. The 1000 grit will get your knives to slide easily through a tomato or pork loin. I assume that the 6000 grit would refine the blade to the point of it making a gong sound each time it is removed from the drawer, but I have not had need to take things to that level. This product has not only worked wonders on my knives, it has cured my lifelong insecurity about sharpening them. It's as though a great weight has finally been lifted and I have solved a riddle, or an enigma. Nothing in this world can you trust: not men, or women, or beasts, but this. . . . . . .this you can trust . Read more

After watching YouTube video on how to use whetstones, it was fairly easy and very satisfying putting a beautiful sharp edge on all my kitchen knives. The combination 400/1000 worked perfectly. The rubber holder for the block kept it in place during the wet process. Im getting rid of the electric knife sharpener that was hard to use and set my teeth on edge with the sound! Read more

Can achieve a really sharp edge with these stones. These were my first stones that I really learned to sharpen on. As long as you're only trying to sharpen and not repair or regrind an edge, these will do the job. 400 to 1000 alone is enough to get a razor edge. Would definitely recommend to anyone that doesn't sharpen often. There are a couple of things I need to mention though: 1. I found out that leaving them submerged in water all the time causes the stones to degrade. The stones develop a film that floats om the water and embeds into the surface of the stones. Also rust spots will tend to form if the stones are not completely cleared of all the metal removed from the knives. Not being able to leave them submerged is a hassle for me if I want to use them everyday. I have to make sure to soak them 30 mins everyday before I open to ensure they are saturated. 2. The stones become closer to 400 grit the more you use the leveling stone (I use it as a dressing stone. 400 grit is not coarse enough to level a stone). After flattening its best to use another grit thats close to the one of the stone. Eg after flattening the 3000 I would recommend using 3000 grit to dress the stone. Can be done with another 3000 grit stone, sandpaper, or abrasive powder. Haven't used them with high carbon knives but im sure it wouldnt be a problem. If these were splash and go stones, I would never buy another stone for work again. Going to replace these for nagura splash and go stones. Read more
