WOW!! If you are looking for episodes of Sherlock Holmes with Basil, no impostors need apply, these redone issues are unbelievably flawless. For years and years, years and years ago, I watched these movies late at night no matter what condition they were in, or how bad the transmission quality. Not any more, I got 'em in pristine condition, and retouched by the UCLA film dept.. The movies are incredibly sharp and clear. The blacks look black, and the whites look white, like they should. Any Basil fan of Sherlock should be gobbling these up fast. I'm going to get the final two discs also. I'm not going to review the movies at all. What is the point? You are either a Sherlock fan or not. I grew up with these movies from the 30s-40s and they are flat out fun. NO, I didn't watch them in the 30s or 40s, but 50s to 60s and beyond. These movies will always entertain. If you are not from that era, give them a try anyway. Watch these along with the new king of Sherlocks, the Cumberbatch PBS series, and compare notes. The new PBS series is possibly the best show on TV now. Check it out. Read more
The two movies in this collection are the first and last Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. The Hound of the Baskervilles was made at Fox and is filmed in the 1890's time period. Basil & Nigel did one more film together at Fox: ( The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (also set in the 1890's). Then a few years later the duo moved over to Universal and filmed 12 Sherlock Holmes movies together (set in the 1940's), with Pursuit to Algiers being the last one. I recently watched the new Sherlock Holmes series on BBC: Sherlock: Season One & Sherlock: Season Two starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and I loved them. But that got me to start thinking about how many Basil Rathbone Sherlock movies I had on hand. Turns out I only had 8 of the 14, and I was missing both The Hound and Pursuit. This DVD fit my needs very well. I'll pick up the other four I am missing and life will be good. While I enjoy the new BBC series, fans need to be aware that the new stories are all based on the original stories (just modernized of course). I just watched The Hound last night and it was pretty darn good. Deerstalker hat and all! Read more
Growing up in the 50s & 60s, there was only one Sherlock Holmes - Basil Rathbone. Elegant, smart but not condescending and a quirk of humor. As I grew older, I still have a small place in my heart for his portrayals, but Jeremy Brett has stepped into the role beautifully. Watson? Nigel Bruce plays a slightly dense & dithering Watson. I hope his portrayal was as the director wanted, but I was disappointed as Doyle wrote of him as an ex-Army doctor. No doctor could be THAT dense or clueless as Watson was shown here. Watson? Martin Freeman, Edward Hardwicke and David Burke all nailed Watson. Then again, that could be a big difference in audience tastes from the 40s interpretations vs. the 80s, 90s and the 21st century versions. Nigel Bruce was a good foil for Holmes to bounce ideas off and faithful as a 'curly-haired spaniel'. (Sorry, I had to put that in...) This series of Sherlock & Watson adventures are worth watching. I do have them on DVD, but try the Jeremy Brett and the contemporary versions as well if you missed them. I have ALL of them, plus Doyle's stories are a meaty read, just don't take them to bed. You won't get any sleep! Read more
Excellent transfer to DVD and at an unbelievable value! If you like Sherlock Holmes, do not miss this DVD! Without going into detail, I would just like to say that the way Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce play off one another is pure genius. The acting between these two performers is flawless! They were close friends in real life and when Mr. Bruce passed away, Mr. Rathbone refused to make any more films in the series without his good friend "Dr. Watson" (Nigel) at his side....no matter how many $$$$ the studio offered to him. If you have never seen this pair as Holmes & Watson, I envy you! "The Hound of the Baskervilles" was the 1st pairing of these two actors with "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" soon to follow as the public loved this series of Films."The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" also stars a very young (and beautiful) Ida Lupino and the ever "evil" actor George Zucco as Holmes' nemesis, Dr. Moriarty. Personally, "The Scarlet Claw" is my favorite in the series which takes place somewhere in Canada where it is always foggy and spooky with the entire town in fear of being the Scarlet Claw's next victim (the fiend glows in the dark which is very cool). The Cinematography is pure perfection. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Take advantage of these prices (if you are a Movie Buff or just appreciate great films) while they last! You will not be disappointed!! Read more
I purchased this and another of the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes DVDs. These were titles I had not seen before except for the Hound of the Baskervilles which I had seen when I was in elementary school and couldnβt follow. These are great movies which you are sure to enjoy if you enjoy a good mystery or just enjoy watching Holmes and Watson doing what seems so simple to them. Read more
I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He is a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and enjoys watching it throughout the year. As a matter of fact, he occasionally quotes the lines in our everyday life! Read more
This is a poor quality dvd. The Chris Lee show is un watchable and terrible music. The other films have poor audio and you canβt here them. Read more
