The smell is true camphor and it does indeed work to open your airways. Less is more, I suggest putting one on a candle warmer or in a spot near your heating to get the scent flowing. An old school mechanic trick is to put one in tool boxes to prevent rust because camphor oil can create a harmless coating on metal. I can not attest to that but I can say I'd rather my tools smell of camphor than petroleum distillates. Now to address some concerns from other reviews 1- this has a strong odor as it is camphor. Open some vapo-rub for comparison. I am familiar with kerosene and it is a very different smell. Nothing like this. 2- camphor can be burned as incense. I think it's overkill but it can. You need an incense burner to control the flame. Putting it on a dish and lighting it is harmless but not very clever. It will, like anything that can burn, flame up and give off smoke and soot.
