Knife sharpening is a hobby of mine and I have a lot of different sharpening devices. This is the simplest and easiest way to get a seriously sharp knife with little or no sharpening skill or experience. It’s really simple to use. I can take a knife from about butter knife dull to hair shaving sharp in 5 or 6 minutes. It works great on serrated knives as well. Don’t be fooled by the pull-through type sharpeners. A lot of people use the , looking for ease. Just out of interest, I’ve tried several. They remove a lot of metal and pretty well ruin a good blade. I would take this Spyderco Guantlet 10 out of 10 times over one of them. In fact, I’d bet I could repair the damage caused by the pull-through type sharpeners with this Spyderco in under 10 minutes. Highly recommended. Read more

I very much like the shape of the rods. I find that the shape of the rods is very conducive to even edge contact. After receiving the sharpening set I proceeded to sharpen the blade on my small EDC keychain Victorianox which was very dull to a very sharp edge. I was amazed how aggressive the Boron Nitride rods were for the initial cut to shape the blade to the correct angle. The fine stone did a great job finishing off the edge to a very sharp edge. I then proceeded to sharpen a whole Henkel kitchen knife set to a very fine edge. My son had two knives which he needed sharpening, a Leatherman, and a Benchmade. I was able to sharpen the fairly dull Benchmade to an arm hair cutting edge in about 5 minutes. I am impressed. For a hand powered sharpening system I am impressed how quickly i was able to get a nice edge on 6 knives my first attempt with this system. I would like to see a finer stone in this set to get a bit finer edge, but am very happy with the results that I have gotten. I do think that the stroking wheel on my Tormek will polish the blades nicely. I think that this was a good investment and offers ease of use and good performance, at a fair price. Read more

Really like the simplicity of using this compared to other systems. After having borrowed a buddy's older Spyderco Sharpmaker, I still ended up buying this one and I'm glad I did. The Gauntlet's sharpening rods in the cats-eye shape are so much better than the old triangular style, there really is no comparison. So far, I have used this for a handful of pocket knives, old steak knives, and a couple of high-end Wusthoff cutlery knives with no issues. Also, the ability to sharpen serrated blades is very handy as well. Another great product from Spyderco! Read more

I have spent thousands of dollars on sharpening systems stones etc… I can put a mirrored edge on just about any knife and make it split hairs. This however is not practical for all uses. After many years down the riddle of steel rabbit hole… My final conclusion is this unless you are re-profiling this system will produce an excellent long lasting edge perfect for just about every use. If all you want to do is split hairs for YouTube we’ll get something else.. If you want an edge the handles real world usage and is very sharp get this. For reprofiling I recommend the TSPROF Blitz. So far I have used this to set the edge on the following steels with great results. CPM-Magnacut, S90V, Maximet, S30V, Cruwear, M4, M-390, S45VN, VG-10, 440C, and yes even Hyper Molybdenum in Japanese Chiefs knives. The secret is you must use the CBN Rods first very, very lightly to get a sticky sharp edge and you must move your blade so all parts touch not just up and down and never come off the tip or else you will round it. Once you have the edge set with the CBN rods you refine it with the white rods. If done right this edge will not slip on harder smoother objects and will slice food with ease. Never mind the fixed degrees that is unimportant, and easy to work around. The only time exact degrees matter is in re-profiling and you use a digital angle cube correctly to assure it, so don’t let the hype take your dollars. The buck stops here and this unit works on all knives from folders to fixed blades. Truly the only maintenance and edge you will ever need. Unless you are re-profiling or want to get into crazy edges that are not really useful for a variety of uses. Read more
