Standard Horizon HX210 Handheld VHF Radio black

Got two of these radios - they work well and have not let me down. Positives: - good battery runtime - good screen - intuitive interface - FM radio - good size/weight - good price - good support - good warranty - plenty of accessories Negative: - OEM antenna is bad (Essentially just a resistor), recommend replacing - belt clip is OK, but it's difficult to use on the vest's shoulder strap. A different mounting (swivel?) option would be better Overall, i recommend it as a good, inexpensive, basic radio with some good features. Read more

Who ever is on the shore - does not need this one - the shore can use a less expensive model - but - 20 years as a COAST GUARD RADIOMAN - this one is very cool. GPS, buttons everywhere - but - it does NOT let me use MORSE CODE on it. Range - still about 5 miles to a mountain or something or to the horizon .. which ever comes first. Books will tell ya 30 miles, but, that's because the earth curves at about that point, and, the radio signal just goes off into space - and - perhaps - 'cause no one really knows - some alien, Illegal or not, on some planet several light years away - in about 100 light years - might get that transmission and say "HUH?". Good radio with a longer lasting time between charges. (2 to 3 days if you turn it off when not in use)I bought this to work offshore. The built in light can be turned on manually or is water activated. I like the variable power options as well. I should have bought the remote mic. to go with it. Read more

I had an old version of this that I lost in a turnover boating accident. This one is better in every way, including being self buoyant. My old one needed a jacket to float which made it bulky. I put it in the side pocket of my kayak for comfort. It got tossed when the kayak rolled. Oops, can’t get the radio due to my stupidity. This one not only performs at least as well on the radio side, but since it is self buoyant I can easily fit it in the pocket of my PFD and not lose it when I need it most. And, the price has come down. Awesome! Money well spent as insurance when you need it. Read more
