They don't run small, but they are snug and a bit form fitting (slim fit). I normally wear a Large or XL (36-38 waist). I got the XL to be safe. The waist fits fine - not tight at all around the waist - but these are form fitting around my thighs. I do have athletic thighs. I wouldn't call them tight necessarily, they're just more snug around the thigh than I'm used to. They have plenty of stretch to them so they're comfortable and it doesn't bother me. They remind me of Speedo brand, which are always snug. In other words, if you're in between sizes I might suggest sizing up. But for most people I would suggest following the size chart and ordering your normal size, because otherwise they'll be loose around the waist. I know that Starter has a separate product line for slim fit, and I specifically avoided those. But I guess even their standard product lines are slimmer profile these days. Surprisingly, though, despite the slimmer profile, there is ample room in the crotch. I have a hard time finding shorts that don't pinch my man parts. But these are fine, well designed - crotch length is good. The inseam is a tad shorter than average. They say 7 inch inseam, but I measure them at 4.75 inches. I don't know how they measure this, but they land several inches above my knee, shorter than I'm used to. The fabric is on the thin side, but they do have the lining. I think the material is durable, though, and it's soft and silky. And the liner is soft too - not the old fashioned scratchy mesh material. The waist is elastic, and they also have the drawstring. I love wearing shorts like these all summer long. They're great swim trunks, but also great for water sports, fishing, boating, beach sports, basketball, or anything really. I literally wear them just about everywhere. And I especially love wearing shorts like this to the amusement park or water park - they dry so quickly and I don't have to change my shorts at all. Even if I swim in them, they're dry in just a few minutes. In the future I'll probably stick to my normal brands (favorite are Columbia, Eddie Bauer, Magellan, Patagonia) because they're baggier, provide a little extra room in the thighs, and have a slightly more versatile styling in that they look more like normal shorts. These kindof look like swim trunks because of the logo and the drawstring. Also, these are better for a person with a slim fit profile. But I still do like them quite a bit. Read more

The Starter Men's Quick Dry Stretch Volley Swim Trunk fits great on my 6'1" 175 lb hubby. The red is a lifeguard red. He will definitely stand out when he's SUPPing or kayaking! They are comfortable and legs are not too long. He says he fits well in a size large. He was surprised that he needed a large, cause he typically wears btw and medium and large, but these were not too big, so if you're between sizes (like he is), go with the larger size. Read more

The blue is a vibrant color that looks great. These have some stretch for a good fit and give while exercising or swimming with the kids. Tie in the front for a snug fit and these dry very quickly which is huge plus for driving after swimming. The back pocket is good for a hotel room key or similar. I got these Starter swim trunks for my upcoming beach vacation, and so far I am pleased. The UPF 40+ sun protection is a big sell for me, and I love that they're quick-dry and stretchy. After carefully reading other reviews, I sized up (I'm between Medium and Large), which seems like the right call. They're definitely more fitted than baggy, with a shorter 4-5 inch inseam that's more athletic than traditional swim shorts. The fabric feels soft and silky, and the elastic waist with drawstring seems comfortable. I'm looking forward to testing these out on vacation - perfect for swimming, water sports, or just hanging by the pool.
