Due to the shape of the plug and its extreme softness, it is hard to insert--the only reason my rating is 4 instead of 5 stars. It gets easier with practice. I agree with the reviewer who says lube yourself, not the plug, so you can grip the plug the right way to insert it. XL plug is unusable piece of garbage. I bought the large version first. Liked it, it was squishy yet firm and was able to get it in and out. However, the XL is almost like hard rubber. Not squishy at all.. and it's so wide, that it would be like fisting, for me to even attempt it. I threw it in the trash and said goodbye to $34. It's a bit difficult to get inside due to its softness but it can be done. More stiffness would be appreciated. Once inside, you feel very filled so it's a nice way to stretch out your bottom. Short version: I purchased the XL version of this, wish I had bought it sooner.
